Until the 19th century, crackers and fireworks are quite expensive. Only Kings, Queens, and economically well-to-do people purchase and use varieties of crackers during festivals, ceremonies, and functions. Indian citizens started using fireworks for Diwali and celebrations only after 1400 AD when gunpowder was used in wars and battles.

Anecdotes and inscriptions reveal a fact that pyrotechnic materials were used liberally during Vijayanagar Dynasty. When Abdur Razzaq, the ambassador of Timurid Sultan visited the court of King Devaraya II in the year 1443, artistic fireworks and crackers were displayed as a mark of respect to him.

A painting depicting Mughals using firecrackers inside the court is displayed in British Museum. This shows that Mughal rulers loved crackers and used them during functions, celebrations, and festivals.

The fireworks were displayed during Rukmini Syamvara. When the wedding between Lord Krishna and Rukmini took place the people started bursting fireworks like rockets.

A famous Maratha chronicle text states that ‘Raja of Kota celebrated Diwali consecutively for 4 days and arranged massive fireworks that shook the entire city.

The first firecracker manufacturing industry was set up in Kolkata in the 19th century. Post-independence Sivakasi became the firecracker hub of India. Majority of the industries based in Sivakasi manufacture and exports varieties of firecrackers.
