A brief biography of famous Tamil poet Shri Subramaniya Barathiyar


A learned scholar, writer, freedom fighter, and famous Tamil poet Shri Subramani Baarathiyar who is fondly called Barathy was born to Chinnasami Iyer and Lakshmi ammal on December 11, 1882. He lost his mother when he was just 5 years old and started living with his father and siblings in the Ettayapuram home.


He started writing plenty of Tamil poems at the age of 7 and went on to become one of the best Tamil poets in Tamil Nadu. The then king of Ettayapuram gave him the title Barathiyar. From that date onwards his name got changed to Subramania Barathiyar.


He got married to Chellammal at the age of 14 and lived happily with her even though he disliked Child marriage. He continued his studies at Allahabad University and graduated from it with a Sanskrit degree. He also mastered English and Hindi languages during his stay at Allahabad.


He became a freedom fighter in the year 1905. Bharathiar worked as a Chief Editor in Tamil and English publications like Bala baratham and India which became an instant hit in local areas. He has written hundreds of Tamil poets which instantly became hit.


He was trampled by a Parthasarathy temple elephant and admitted to the hospital with serious injuries. Later he recovered from shock and injuries but died on September 11 1921 at the young age of 39.


Even though he died at a young age his Tamil poems are still popular in every nook and corner of India.

His birth home was converted into a museum. You can visit his home (museum) and take photos inside it. You can find the sticks, turban, dhoti, and books used by Subramania Bharathiar when you visit his home.

  • Kayathaar


Kayathaar which is near Kovilpatti is the place where the mighty king Veerapandiya Kattabomman was hanged by British rulers in 1799. A memorial was built by the government a few years back at Kayathar as a mark of respect for this great freedom fighter.

It is a five-hundred-year-old temple dedicated to Goddess Mariamman. The legend is that when Pandava kings reached this place they found no water for bathing and drinking. King Arjuna pierced the arrow on the ground and prayed to Goddess Ganga to bless them with water. The water started gushing out from the ground.
