Coorg tourism

The most sought-after and famous hill station in Karnataka is Coorg, officially named Kodagu. Lying serenely among the high mountains, the scenery of Coorg remains misty throughout the year. Kodavas are the Aboriginals of the area. Aside from Kannada, Kodagu and Kodava are the other two major languages of this hill station.

Coorg is renowned for its coffee plantations, which account for about 60% of the coffee production in India. It also has abundant forests of teak, rosewood, and sandalwood. Staying at one of the many homestays and resorts located on coffee estates is the perfect way to explore the coffee plantations. Alternatively, follow this tour of this coffee plantation. You will walk through the plantations, as well as taste fresh coffee and learn about the process of coffee making. Fascinating it is!

Coorg tourism places

Waterfalls: Two of the largest waterfalls in the Coorg region are Abbey Falls and Irupu Falls. They are best seen only after the monsoon season, but all year round, they have cascading water. The most accessible place is Abbey Falls, located about 15 minutes north of Madikeri. Irupu Falls is almost two hours south of Madikeri and an hour from Nagarhole National Park in the other direction. Many individuals prefer Irupu Falls to Abbey Falls, and a scenic drive to Bangalore can be followed through Nagarhole. In the peak season, after the monsoon, the area around Irupu Falls is rich with butterflies.

Mountains and Hiking: The Coorg area, ideal for hiking, has some tempting peaks and valleys. One of the most famous routes is from Kakkabe to the state's highest point, Thadiyandamol. Enable this hike for at least five hours. Many people also enjoy trekking to Irupu Falls from the Brahmagiri range, starting from Virajpet. It's an arduous hike through the thick forest, though. It is common to combine hiking to Mandalpatti with a visit to Abbey Falls. It is the most popular hike in the forest range of Pushpagiri. Hiking and trekking activities are provided by most Coorg homestays and resorts.

Dubare Elephant Camp: Dubare Elephant Camp is a training camp for elephants operated by the government of Karnataka. You will read more about elephants, ride them, and even clean them off while swimming in the water. The camp is open from 9 a.m. daily. Towards 11 a.m. Uh, and 4.30 p.m. Till 5.30 p.m. The elephants are housed on an island within the camp and it's necessary to take a boat to get there. Therefore, attempt to arrive as early as possible if you want to experience swimming, preferably by 9 a.m. Be aware, though, that this is a government institution, so don't expect good infrastructure or be well organised for it.

In addition, Dubare is a training camp, not a centre for sanctuary or rehabilitation. To avoid visiting it, those who are worried about the care of elephants are told, as the elephants are chained up and disciplined. Staying at one of the cottages at the camp is probable. Just off State Highway 91, near Kushalnagar, about an hour east of Madikeri, the camp is located.

Tibetan Monastery and Golden Temple Namdroling Nyingmapa: This monastery, one of the must-see Buddhist monasteries in India, is home to one of India's largest Tibetan settlements. In the prayer hall and temple, the amount of gold is quite overwhelming, as are the immense gold statues of Buddha, too. It's situated near Kushalnagar, in Bylakuppe.

Notice that, as the area is limited, visitors need a Protected Area Permit to remain inside the monastery. There are, however, day trips permitted. Bring your passport or other identification that is necessary. For thorough insight, this guided tour is advisable.

Madikeri Town: Raja 's Seat is the most popular tourist attraction there if you fancy doing some sightseeing around Madikeri city. Apparently, a favourite of the Kings of Kodagu was this garden spot. The best thing about Raja 's Seat is that, all the way to Kerala, it provides superb sunsets and panoramic views across the valley. However, if you want peace and quiet, it's best to go in the morning. In the evenings, people swarm there. Madikeri has an ancient fort and a palace as well. Most of the palace was, however, transformed into government offices. As a very unattractive museum, a small portion has been opened.

Abbey Falls, Coorg: Abbey Falls, cascading down from a height of 70 feet, is truly a sight to cherish. This place was called Jessy Falls during the rule of the British, as called by the first British chaplain of the area in memory of his pretty daughter. Iruppu Falls, Coorg :Iruppu Falls look positively stunning, tucked away in the Brahmagiri mountain range, coming down from a height of 170 feet in two distinct stages. In addition to basking in natural beauty, people come here to bathe in the pristine water of the fall that is believed to be holy. This cascade 's religious significance and its name, Lakshmana Tirtha Falls, are rooted in the epic Ramayana. Visit this place post monsoon for some spectacular views enhanced by the fluttering butterflies.

Mallalli Falls, Coorg: Though a seasonal waterfall, if you're planning a trip to Coorg during the rainy season, Mallalli Falls is certainly worth visiting. This waterfall, situated at the foothills of the Pushpagiri mountains, majestically cascading from a height of over 200 feet, is among the highest in South India. It is something you will love forever to listen to the sound of water pounding against the rocks here.

Raja’s Seat, Coorg: Would you like to spend your leisure time like the royals did? Head to one of the best tourist spots in Coorg, Raja's Seat. Go with friends or family for a picnic here, catch the most stunning views of the sunset or take your loved one for a romantic evening in the midst of its peaceful surroundings and rich flora and fauna. This attraction is clubbed with a ride to Dubare Elephant Camp, just a 15-minute drive away.

Mandalpatti Viewpoint, Coorg: Mandalpatti's beauty is best defined by its name, which in the local language translates to 'cloud market' or 'mist'. This hilltop, which rises to an altitude of about 4050 feet, is part of the Pushpagiri Reserve Forest and offers the region's most picturesque views. You can take either of the two routes to this point of view, via the shorter Abbey Falls junction or via Makkanduru, which provides captivating views. Want to know the best possible way? To reach the site and return via the latter, take the first route.

Dubare Elephant Camp, Coorg: It won't be an exaggeration to say that without a visit to the Dubare Elephant Camp, your travel to Coorg will be incomplete. A Karnataka Forest Department and Jungle Lodges and Resorts project, this eco-tourism site will give you an insight into the ecology , biology and history of elephants and that's not it. Through not just watching them, but also engaging in things including riding them, feeding them and washing them, you would be able to have an intimate encounter with the mighty creatures.

Brahmagiri Hills, Coorg: Trekking through the green Brahmagiri Hills trails is perhaps one of the best things to do in Coorg for adventure enthusiasts. You will experience natural beauty at its finest when ascending up its 300 feet-high peak: dense forested forests, vibrant flora and sparkling streams.
