About Temple:The Veeratteswarar Temple is a Hindu temple situated in the village of Vazhuvur, 5 miles south – west
of Mayiladuthurai, Tamilnadu. The principal deity is the Hindu god Shiva as Gajasamhara. This is one of
the Atta Veeratta Sthalam of Lord Shiva and also a Vaipu sthalam. The place is located on the banks
of River Veera Chozhan. The Rajagopuram of temple is five storeys, and there are three prakarams. It is
believed to be the birthplace of Lord Ayyappa.

History:

• The Temple has been sung by Thirunavukarasar as a Vaipu thalam in the Thevaram and also sung by Tirumoolar in his Thirumanthiram. It is the Veerattanam where Shiva killed the Rogue elephant Gaja Sura sent by the rishis and won the title as Gajasamhara Murthy.
• Since this holy town has somehow always managed to slip (Vazhuvi in Tamil means ‘to slip’) away from any destruction at the times of Pralaya (Cosmic Deluge), it came to be known as Vazhuvur.
• The temple dates from the time of the Medieval Cholas. The Gaja Samharamurthi idol was sculpted in
  the 11th century.

Day 2 - Nagapattinam Sightseeing

Morning Breakfast at Hotel. Check out from Hotel. Then Proceed towards Veeratteswarar Temple, Vazhuvur. Soundaryaraja Perumal Temple. Nellukadai Mariamman Temple. Finally drop at Railway Junction / Airport.
