About Temple: Karukudi Sargunalingeswarar Temple is a Hindu temple located at Karukudi in Thanjavur district, Tamilnadu, India. The historical name of the place is Marudhanallur.
The presiding deity is Shiva. He is called as Sargunalingeswarar. His consort is known as Advaita Nayaki.
Lord of the temple is Swayambu Shivalinga in sand.
It is one of the shrines of the 276 Paadal Petra Sthalams - Shiva Sthalams glorified in the early medieval Tevaram poems by Tamil Saivite Nayanar Tirugnanasambandar.
It is noteworthy that Lord and Mother facing east in their wedding form bless the devotees. The place Ena Nallur the birth place of Saint Enadhi Nayanar is nearby.
Lord Veena Dakshinamurthy graces from his shrine. Lord Brahmma and king Sargunan had worshipped Lord in this temple. Lord is named after the name of king as Sarguna Lingeswarar.
The temple is facing east with Lord Valampuri Vinayaka gracing the devotees. The Shivalinga in the sanctum sanctorum is very small in size made of sand.
There are signs on the Linga showing that it was made of sand. The Avudaiyar-peeta is of stone.
There are shrines for Lords Valampuri Vinayaka, Lingodhbava, Muruga, Navagrahas the nine planets, Sun and Moon. The statue of a trader Dananjayan in worshipping form is before the Ambica shrine.
This small temple with two prakarams has a 70 feet high Rajagopuram. Both the Shiva and the Ambal shrines face the east.
Only two worship services are offered each day here. Sivarathri in the month of Maasi and Mondays in the month of Karthikai are considered special here.
