In the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia, Ramayana is an iconic epic story that has fascinated many generations and had an insightful impact on art and culture. Geographically, historically, economically, and spiritually, Sri Lanka and India share a close bond. Ramayana belongs to an ancient mythical history long gone. Wherefrom North to South India, and more precisely, in Sri Lanka, it has geographical traces. The Ramayana of Valmiki mentions that King Ravana brought Sita Devi from India with a mythical vehicle called 'push para vimana,' which was also called 'Dandu Monara Yanthranaya' as it is called by Sri Lankans. There are over 50 places mentioned in Ramayana in Sri Lanka, ranging from the place where Sitha was confined. Two battalions fought on this field, the exotic herb lands brought by Hanuman, and finally the place of the great battlefront where Rama executed Ravana, the ten-headed demon-tribed king.
Ramayana : Sri Lankan Ramayana Munneshwaram Temple. Munneswara Temple is considered to be Sri Lanka's oldest Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. Ancient theories about the location where Lord Shiva prayed to King Rama. Brahmahasti Dosha killed King Ravana, who was a Brahmin.
Temple Manawari-Chilaw-Ramayana : As for the faith where Lord Rama settled, the Manawari Temple houses the main Shivalinga. And Rameswaram to get rid of Brahmahatya Dosha in India. The Temple of Manavari is the first place where Lord Rama built the Shivalinga and prayed. It was renamed Ramalingam, as Lord Rama erected it.
Temple Thirukethishwaram-Mannar-Ramayana : One of the five Sivan temples on the island is Thiruketheeswaram. Constructed by Mayan, Ravana's father-in-law. Ramayana was also closely associated with Thiru Ketheeswaram. It is one of three Shivalingas that were built in Sri Lanka by Lord Rama. Thiruketheeswaram is also thought to be the birthplace of Queen Mandodhari of Ravana. The giant Sivalingam was carved out of granite stone that archaeologists excavated in the temple region of Thiruketheeswaram. During their conquest of Mannar in the 16th century, the Portuguese demolished the temple. The demolished and dilapidated temple was eventually restored until it became visible. Its pristine glory with the Hindu elite from Jaffna during the British era.
Route of the Chariot-Ramboda : The Chariot path is a plain area near a Russell WA estate seen from the top of a mountain range. It is assumed that the estate area is the place where Hanuman first imprinted Sri Lanka on its first foot. The mountain that stands along the mountain range between Ashoka Vatika and the capital city of King Ravana is called Pawala Malai. The deserted land and the road to the top of the mountain range was said to be the place where Ravana brought Sitadevi from Lankapura, the capital, to Ashoka Vatika, then a paradise on earth. This passage is believed to have been created by King Ravana with the intention of showing Sitadevi the beauty of his kingdom.
Kotuwa Sita : In Sita Kotuwa, Sita Kotuwa means 'Sita's Fort' in Sinhala, meaning 'Sita's Fort.' This is one of the significant places to visit as part of the Ramayana Trails in Sri Lanka. The first place where Seetha held King Ravana captive after abducting him was Sita Kotuwa. It is also surrounded by spectacular waterfalls, streams, and flora and fauna varieties. Initially, Seetha Devi stayed in the palace of Queen Mandothari until she moved to Seetha Kotuwa and then on to Ashoka Vatika.
Temple Seetha Amman-Nuwara Eliya-Ramayana : On the sides of the stream, there was a temple built where it was believed that Seetha Devi bathed. And Lord Rama, Seetha Devi, Lakshmana, and Hanuman celebrate that as well. It is established that this temple marks the location of Ashoka Vatika, where Sita Devi remained captive under King Ravana. The footprints found by the river are said to be Hanuman's in both large and small sizes, a finding that makes the site more fascinating to examine.
Temple of Divurumpola- Nuwara Eliya-Ramayana : This position is significant as it highlights the "Agni Pariksha" of Sita Devi (a test). Around this town, the locals worship the temple, and this place in Sinhala is also called Divurumpola (place of oath). The swearing of Sita Devi on this spot, accompanied by the unity of the contested parties, was legally acknowledged, as the myth says.
Ramayana of Seetha Eliya (Ashoka Vatika) : Ashoka Vatika is a garden where Sita remained in captivity under Ravana. This is the place to meet in the Sita Eliya region near Nuwara Eliya. Located at the base of the Hakgala Rock, the Hakgala Garden forms part of the famous Ashok Vatika. The Sita Pokunaa atop the Hakgala Rock Jungle, where Sita was kept in captivity, is a barren place. Sita Devi set out to bathe in Sita Eliya's stream.
