Hampi is a village which reminds us time and again of the grandeur and riches once witnessed by the Vijayanagara Empire. At Hampi, the rock cut temple complexes, elaborate bazaars and pavilions show us the architectural wonders Indians were able to achieve. Whether it is the Hampi Bazaar or the temple dedicated to Lord Rama by Hazara Rama, it all shows the cultural beauty that Vijayanagara had. The stone structures are a testimony to the great understanding that Indians possessed of architecture. To immerse yourself in its rich history , culture and architectural splendour, visit Hampi. With music, classical and traditional dances, skits, dramas, fireworks and a lot of excitement, the Hampi Utsav celebrates the spirit of Hampi. Though Hampi has more to see and discover, there are a few remarkable places to visit. This destination of rock and ruins is the delight of any photographer.
October to February, when the weather is the most friendly, is a good time to visit Hampi. It is also a good time to visit the Monsoon, but the boulders may become too slippery. The Hampi Utsav takes place every year in January or February and is a highly recommended cultural extravaganza.
Bath of the Queen: The Queen's Bath was possibly the King and his wives' royal bathing chamber. With its elaborate architecture, the royal pool is another architectural wonder. Your attention will certainly be paid to the massive dome-shaped roof, balconies with tiny windows and a rectangular pool in the centre under open blue skies. As you will be tempted to purchase stone carvings and sculptures created by local artists, keep cash handy.
Riverside Ruins-Hampi Places to Visit: A series of 108 Shiva lingas can be seen here, carved on flat rocky surfaces. Lord Vishnu's rock carved sculpture in a reclining pose is a hot favourite among artists, historians and travellers of the Riverside ruins. It would be a smart idea to hire a local guide. You will be able to offer in-depth information to the local guides.
Museum of Archaeology :If you're a history buff, a highly recommended place to visit in Hampi is the Archeological Museum. Located in Kamlapur, the main ruins of Hampi are a few kilometres away. Some fascinating objects are kept in the museum. An fascinating piece of history can be found here, from armoury, to sculptures, to paintings, to coins.
Matanga Hill provides tourists with the most scenic views of Hampi and its surrounding historical ruins. One will have to trek up the hill for about 30 minutes to reach the Veerbhadra temple. This temple has a rooftop, which is definitely the best place to see the sunrise and sunset over this historic Hampi town's lovely landscape.
Sanctuary of the Daroji Bear: Created in 1994, the Daroji Bear Sanctuary is home to a lot of wildlife, such as leopards, hyenas, jackals, deers, and sloth bears. The honey-loving sloth bears in this sanctuary are native to India and are protected exclusively here. These sloth bears are present only in India and it is therefore highly recommended to stop by to see them if you are taking a trip to Hampi. For nature and wildlife lovers, this is an ideal place in Hampi to visit. Make sure that a decent pair of athletic shoes are worn and that you bring enough drinking water.
Gardens at Tungabhadra and Dam: Another draw, 5 km from Hospet, is the Tungabhadra dam. For irrigation, energy production and flood control, this multi-purpose dam is used. Built across the River Tungabhadra and one of its tributaries, the main source of water for the fields is this dam. The lush and beautifully preserved gardens are a joy to look at. This is one spot where you can go on a clicking spree with your camera.
