In the hills of Dindigul, a neighbourhood in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu, lies Kodaikanal. This lovely lake town is also known as the "Princess of Hill Stations." Kodaikanal is one of India's most popular honeymoon destinations. Kodaikanal means 'the gift of the woods'. Nestled among the rolling slopes of the Palani Hills, Kodaikanal stands at an altitude of 7200 feet above sea level, and you will find that every bit of what you imagined it to be is real once you visit this hill station.
Kodaikanal has many natural scenic attractions that its tourists enjoy and make it a popular romantic destination for newlyweds. Most young people come for fun and bike trips. It is also known for homemade chocolates and oil made from eucalyptus.
There are many tourist sites in and around Kodaikanal such as the Coaker 's Walk, Bear Shola Falls, Bryant 's Park, the Kodaikanal Lake, the Green Valley View, the Shembaganur Museum of Natural History, the Kodaikanal Science Observatory, the Pillar Rocks, the Guna caves, the Silver Cascade, the Dolphin 's Nose, the Kurinji Andavar Murugan temple and the Berijam Lake.
Kodaikanal is also home to the unusual Kurinji flowers, which bloom once every twelve years. For many adventure activities such as trekking, boating, house riding and cycling, to name a few, the place also offers scope.
Kodaikanal Lake is an artificial 45-hectare (110-acre) lake built in 1863 that is roughly star-shaped. It is the most prominent geographic landmark and tourist attraction in Kodaikanal. The Kodaikanal Boat Club can hire rowboats and pedalos. For short times, horses and bicycles can be rented alongside the pool. A favourite walk for locals and visitors alike is the 5-kilometre trail that circles the perimeter of this lake.
Bryant Park: A well managed 8.3-hectare (20.5-acre) botanical garden is just east of the lake and 500 metres (1,600 ft) from the bus stand. In 1908, a forest officer from Madurai, H.D. Bryant, designed and established the park and named it after him. With 325 species of trees, shrubs, and cacti, the park during the peak season is a rainbow of flowers. Almost 740 varieties of roses are devoted to a wide section.
There is a eucalyptus tree from 1857 and a Bodhi tree that gives the park a religious sense. Ornamental plants are grown for sale in a nursery. Every summer, to coincide with the peak season, the park organises horticultural displays and flower shows. The park entrance fee is nominal, and it is open all year round.
Coaker’s Walk: A 1-kilometer (3,300 ft) paved pedestrian path running along the edge of steep slopes on the southern side of Kodai is Coaker 's Walk, 500 metres (1,600 ft) from the bus-stand, built by Lt. Coaker in 1872.
On a clear day, one can see the valley of the Pambar River in the southeast, the town of Periyakulam and even the city of Madurai, as far as the Dolphin's Nose in the south. When a person can see his shadow on the clouds with a rainbow halo, a mysterious unusual phenomenon called the Brocken spectre can be observed. This happens when the sun is in front of the audience, and clouds and mist are in front. Halfway down the walk, there is an observatory with a telescope.
Kudhanthai Velappar Temple (Poombarai Village) is 15 kilometres (9.3 miles) from the bus stand. The temple of Lord Muruga is situated in Poombarai village. The village is completely covered by a forest reserve. The final approach to this quiet area is a foot-path that climbs gently.
Green Valley View is a panoramic view of the plains and a sheer drop of 1,500 metres (4,900 ft) overlooking the Vaigai Dam to the south, is 5.5 kilometres (3.4 miles) from the bus stand and near the golf course. The stairway leading up to it is highly commercialized to tempt visitors and lined with rows of shops.
Established in 1895, the Shembaganur Museum of Natural History, 6 kilometres (3.7) from the bus stand, is open to the public (except Tuesdays) to display their excellent taxidermy collection of more than 500 mammal, bird and insect species and a living collection of more than 300 species of exotic orchids. The museum is affiliated with Chennai's Loyola College and shows objects of people of the ancient Palaiyar tribes whose descendants still reside in those hills.
The highest position near Kodai is the Kodaikanal Solar Observatory, 6 kilometres (3.7 mi) from the bus stand on Observatory Lane, at 2,343 metres (7,687 ft). In 1901, the first observations started here. Former Director John Evershed discovered the radial motion phenomenon in sunspots, now known as the Evershed effect. A grand panorama, including Sothupparai Dam, Vaigai Dam, Periyakulam and Varaha River, can be seen by the Kodaikanal Terrestrial Telescope. A comprehensive astronomical science museum with organised public tours, access to the astronomy library, and planned night-time telescopic sky viewing is available at this Indian Institute of Astrophysics facility. It is open to the public every day during the busy season, and every Friday for the rest of the year for a few hours.
Pillar Rocks is a group of three giant rock pillars that stand 122 metres (400 ft ) high, 8 kilometres (5.0 mi) from the bus stand. Operated by the Department of Tamil Nadu Forest, the viewpoint can be crowded, but it is not marketed. An excellent public garden adjacent to the viewpoint is located.
The deep bat-infested chambers between the three gigantic boulders, the Pillar Rocks, are Guna caves, made famous by the Tamil movie Gunaa, previously named Devil's Kitchen. Owing to the deaths of twelve youths there, the deep narrow ravines of the caves are still inaccessible to the public. These dangerous caves are still strongly protected, and visitors can see parts of the cave system from afar. The interior of the caves was well photographed in the late 1970s.
Silver Cascade, 8 kilometres (5.0 miles) from Kodaikanal, is a 55-metre (180 ft) waterfall created from the outflow of Kodaikanal Lake at a wide bend in the long and winding Laws Ghat Path, at an altitude of 1,800 metres (5,900 ft). This impressive waterfall is a famous stop for first-time tourists.
There are a few sellers of souvenirs and fruits and a number of monkeys here. Below the bridge which crosses the stream here, there is also a smaller but more serene waterfall.
A flat rock projected over a chasm 2,000 metres (6,600 ft) deep is Dolphin's Nose, 8 kilometres (5.0 mi) from the bus stand. It is a 1 kilometre (0.62 mi) undisturbed area down a steep rocky path that starts shortly after the Pambar Bridge. One can see views of steep rocky escarpments rising from the plains.
You can enter the old village of Vellagavi here through a rough bridle route. A short paved walkway leads to Pambar Falls from the road here (which is also addressed locally as 'Liril Falls' after the famous advertisement filmed in 1985 for Liril Soap).
