Megamalai Tour
Megamalai is a mountain range in the Western Ghats in the Theni district near Kumily, Kerala, generally referred to as the High Way Mountains. Cardamom plantations and tea estates dot it. The mountain range, which is rich in flora and fauna, is 1,500 metres above sea level. The field, now mostly planted with tea plants, includes the Woodbriar Group's cloudlands, high ways, venniar, and manalar estates. Access is restricted to a large degree and contains mostly untouched remains of evergreen forest.
For a long time, a proposal to create the Megamalai Wildlife Sanctuary on 600 km2 of forest in the division has been pending with the Tamil Nadu Forest Department. In the sanctuary, the proposed priority tasks include: poaching protection, the use of pesticides for the removal of ganja (Cannabis sativa) and the cultivation of watersheds, as well as scientific management.
The Megamalai Wildlife Sanctuary can be a great buffer for the Periyar Tiger Reserve and the Grizzled Squirrel Wildlife Sanctuary, which can greatly improve the protection of the southern Western Ghats, the hills south of the Palakkad Gap.
Natural life found on the High Wavy Mountains incorporate Oriental nectar vulture, incredible pied hornbill, Indian earthy colored mongoose, Jerdon's palm civet, white-bellied short-wing, dark naped ruler, pied thrush, gaur, tiger, panther, Asian elephant, mouse deer, Ghatixalus asterops, Raorchestes beddomii, Raorchestes ponmudi, Nyctibatrachus sp., Ramanella triangularis, Ramanella montana, Calotes grandisquamis, Hemidactylus anamallensis, Salea anamallayana, Kaestlea travancorica, Kaestlea laterimaculata.
The last thorough study of flora in the biodiversity-rich area of Megamalai was performed in the early 1980s, according to experts. No systematic study has been performed on the vegetation since then. Vegetation varies from the foothills of scrub forests, ubiquitous expanses of tea and coffee estates, to plantations of spices (pepper, cardamom , cinnamon) and finally to the top of thick evergreen forests.
A view of the entire mountain range of Varusanadu Hills is offered by the Highwavys. All around, in particular the Highwavys Group of Estates, there are large private tea, spices, and coffee plantations. Some of the other small plantations in Megamalai are also called Ananda Plantations, Ponsiva Plantations, and Fieldmede Estate. A manmade lake offers plenty of space for leisurely walks. At 9 ° 42 'N 77 ° 24' E, Kardana Coffee Estate is situated in the High Wavy Mountains.
Six hill dams and the place of origin of Suruli Theertham (Suruli falls near Cumbum town) are popular tourist attractions. One can see the deep Cumbum Valley and the villages of the Theni district from the Manalar dam. A boat or ferry service is expected to be launched by the Tourism Department to enable tourists to enter the city.
The heart of Megamalai is the Vellimalai (Silver Mountain, 1,650 m) zone. On green hilltops, silver-lined clouds seem to rest gently; the place where the river Vaigai originates is nestled in this area. This place provides an opportunity to see tea gardens that are aesthetically and scientifically managed by wild animals.
The Megamalai Falls (Suruli Falls) derive from the Megamalai Hills on the Suruli River. Water flows down through the twin falls for 58 metres. At dawn and at dusk, there are regular visits by elephants, spotted deer, gaur, and other wild animals.
From Theni via Chinnamanur, or Andipatti via Kandamanayakkanur, the Megamalai mountain range can be accessed in two ways. They can both be accessed from Madurai and Dindigul by road. From Madurai, Theni is 76 km away.
Chinna Suruli Falls is a picturesque destination to visit from Theni, set in the lap of lush, green forests. In the foothills of the mountain, it cascades all the way down from Megamalai to create a pool of cold, sparkling water. Chinna Suruli Falls is a lovely and serene destination to visit in and around Theni, situated around 54 kilometres from the main town, close to the village of Kombaithozhu. If you visit Theni and its nearby attractions, it may be included in your local sightseeing itinerary.
Maharajamettu View Point: You need to take a trip to Maharajamettu View Point to take in all the beautiful beauty of the place at once. This place gives the entire place a bird's eye view and you'd be surprised to see endless greenery complimented by the rocky mountains.
Murugan Temple: Murugan Temple is a pious place on a hilltop on the Meghamalai mountain ranges from where people not only come to seek blessings, but also to see the picturesque beauty of the place as the temple sits on a hilltop. This is a famous temple that must be visited and pristine.
