Pune is a thriving Maharashtra metropolis, ranked number one in India for ease of living. It is a centre of diverse people and events, also referred to as the Oxford of the East, and is quickly rising into one of the country's top metropolitan cities. Pune is a city that combines modernity perfectly with colonial-era charm sprinkled with tradition, and it deserves the title of being Maharashtra's cultural capital.
The origins of ancient Poona, which gave rise to the Maratha Empire and had a very crucial role to play in the history of India's independence, lie behind the modern commercialised façade of Pune. Pune is internationally renowned for the Osho Ashram, which draws supporters from all over the world. Dotted with palaces and temples, the Shaniwar Wada Palace and the Aga Khan Palace are the most prominent of these.
The Singhagad Fort is a must-visit tourist attraction to witness the grandiose Maratha architecture coupled with breathtaking views of the Sahyadris. It offers excellent trekking trails to the top of the cliffs due to its enticing position on the Bhuleshwar Range of the Sahyadri Mountains.
Shaniwarwada, once Pune 's seat of the Peshwa administration, is a 286-year-old mansion and one of the city's finest examples of architecture. It is now one of Maharashtra's most popular tourist destinations. This grand mansion was designed as the residence of the Peshwas by the Peshwa Bajirao I itself. While Wada currently covers an area of 625 acres, it covered almost the entire area of the town itself in its heyday.
With its numerous forts and fountains, and the majestic statue of Baji Rao I that greets the visitor at the entrance of the palace, the place never fails to amaze the visitor. While an unexplained fire in 1828 destroyed much of the Wada, what remains of it is equally exciting and majestic.
While ridden with tales of treachery and deception, the Shaniwar Wada is one of the last standing witnesses to the Peshwas' grandeur, bravery, and just law. All around this historic building, the entire old part of the city of Pune is laid out in a chaotic but ironically orderly fashion. The oldest markets in Pune, including Laxmi Lane, Tulshibaug, Ravivar Peth, etc., can be found around Shaniwar Wada.
The mighty Aga Khan Palace building is situated in Pune and was built in 1892 by Sultan Muhammed Shah Aga Khan III. It is one of Indian history's most significant landmarks and has been influential in many defining moments of the independence of India. It was once the site where prisoners were held by Mahatma Gandhi, his wife, Kasturba Gandhi, and Sarojini Naidu and Mahadev Desai.
Both for its architectural beauty and its historical importance, the Aga Khan Palace is well recognised. Spread over a large 19-acre property, the palace is now the Gandhi National Memorial Society's headquarters. Here, one of the prime activities is still making khadi.
The Sultan constructed the palace to help the poor who were hit by famine in the neighbouring areas. In the memory of Kasturba Gandhi and Mahadev Desai, in the palace premises, the architect Charles Corea had their memorials built. The palace houses a museum with a rich collection of pictures. There are also other objects such as Gandhi's personal possessions. The palace also has Mahatma Gandhi 's ashes buried in its land. The monument was declared of national significance in 2003.

A 16th century historical landmark, Lal Mahal is situated near Shaniwar Wada in Pune. The palace has important storeys to tell, subject to countless attacks and initial revival. It was first restored to his family in the 1630s by Shivaji 's father, Shahaji Bhosle. This red-colored structure is an architectural wonder illustrating the craftsmanship and culture of that period, from being a childhood home for Shivaji to taking Shaistekhan head-on.
One of Pune's most well-known landmarks is Vetal Tekdi. This envelops the whole town and is a beautiful place to spend an evening or an early morning. Various names are known, such as Hanuman Tekdi, MIT Tekdi, and Pashan Tekdi.
The Raja Dinkar Museum was founded in 1962 by Baba Dinkar Kelkar in memory of his son, who died at the young age of seven, located on Shukawar Peth on the Bajirao Road.
The three storey museum, currently operated and maintained by the Department of Archaeology, Government of Maharashtra, boasts a whopping collection of 15,000 collectibles including Mughal lamps, musical instruments, nutcrackers, Ganpati's arms, carved palace doors, excellent collection of pottery, terracotta, copper and brass pots, paintings on the mythological epic Ramaya scenes, It took almost 40 years to assimilate and set up the entire museum; in 1960, the museum was ready to open to the public.
