Portugal Tourism
Portugal is one of the most valuable destinations in Europe, with its rich history, eccentric cities and exquisite countryside. As one can see it moving as they ride from green mountains in the north to rugged cliffs and waterfalls in the middle to the desert-like landscape in the Alentejo and comfortable beaches in the Algarve, the landscape is extremely diverse. Fourteen of Portugal's golf courses, recently named the 'Best Golf Destination', are among the top 100 in Europe. Surfing is another practice sought after by Portugal. If you want the best of Europe's landscapes and culture in one place, Portugal is the place to be.
Mosteiro dos Jerónimos, Lisbon : Belém is synonymous with the golden Discovery Age of Portugal. It is from the shores of this suburb of Lisbon that intrepid navigators set out on long and dangerous voyages in the 15th and 16th centuries to chart unknown waters and chart new territories.
In 1498, one such sailor, Vasco da Gama, discovered the sea route to India and King Manuel I commissioned a monument to honour his achievement, which became an enduring emblem of the astonishing era of conquest and expansion of the region. Today, the Mosteiro dos Jerónimos is one of the most cherished and revered buildings in the country, and is a must-see on the agenda of any tourist.
The church and monastery represent the spirit of the period, and contain some of the finest examples of Manueline architecture found anywhere in Portugal; it is stunning to find the beautifully embellished decoration on the South Portal. The stunning cloister is similarly exuberant inside. The church properly houses the Vasco da Gama tomb and other national figureheads, including Luís de Camões, the greatest poet and chronicler of the discoveries in Portugal.
Oceanário de Lisboa, Lisbon: Lisbon's oceanarium is arguably Portugal's most successful and family-friendly tourist attraction, beautifully conceived to showcase the unique ocean ecosystems of the planet. This is one of the best and largest oceanariums in Europe, containing a wide variety of fish and marine animals.
The habitats of the Atlantic , Pacific, Indian, and Antarctic oceans are recreated by four distinct seas and landscapes. A large central tank, visible from various levels, full of sharks, rays, and many other fine wonders and deep denizens. The transparent plexiglass architecture is such that smaller tropical species appear to be swimming with their larger cousins, housed in separate aquariums set around the main tank. The open-air landscapes, where penguins, sea otters, and other adorable and cuddly birds and mammals co-exist in carefree harmony, accompany this incredible spectacle.
Palácio Nacional de Sintra, Lisbon Coast: Sintra 's breathtaking location, nestled in the lap of a wooded mountain range, is reason enough to visit this charming, verdant place. Indeed, as a World Heritage Cultural Landscape, UNESCO recognises the destination such as its beauty and the importance of the array of historic tourist attractions clustered in and around the old town, Sintra Velha.
Sintra exudes passion as a favoured summer retreat for the kings and queens of Portugal and a seductive destination for various authors and poets, including Lord Byron and William Beckford. The old town is a labyrinth of cobbled streets lined with elegant town houses painted pink, mustard, and lilac in pastel hues. A magnificent central square that is dominated by the wonderful Palácio Nacional de Sintra surrounds the narrow streets.
Sintra 's National Palace, easily recognisable by its enormous conical chimneys, dates from the late 14th century and is Portugal's oldest standing palace. The building is regally furnished and spread over many floors, all of which convey a distinctive theme and are decorated accordingly. The majestic Sala dos Brasões, a glittering domed hall embellished with 72 noble Portuguese families' coats of arms, is a highlight.
Torre de Belém, Lisbon: The Torre de Belém, one of Portugal's most beloved historical monuments and a Lisbon landmark, stands as a sign of the Era of Discovery and the exploration journeys undertaken in the 15th and 16th centuries.
Completed in 1521 as a fortress to protect the approaches to the Tagus River, the tower is regarded as a military architectural masterpiece. Crafted by Francisco de Arruda in the Manueline style, the façade is made of beautifully carved stone, typified by maritime motifs, such as twisted cords and armillary spheres. The decor is heightened by an impressive Renaissance loggia. The architectural importance of the tower is such that it has been identified as a world heritage site by UNESCO.
Hiking the Gerês Mountain Range : The Serra do Gerês is a mountain range of breath-taking beauty located in the remote Minho region of northern Portugal. Set within the glorious Parque Nacional da Peneda-Gerês, one of Portugal's top places to visit, the granite peaks are one of the highest and most spectacular in the world, defining the nature of this vast national park.
The Gerês Mountains draw walkers, hikers and outdoor enthusiasts as one of Portugal's greatest natural attractions to one of Europe's last great wildernesses, a rough and rough landscape noted for its lush valleys dotted with shimmering lakes, a dispersion of traditional villages, uncommon flora and fauna, and a way of life that has all but vanished from the rest of the mountain register of the world.
Ancient granite paths, signposted for hikers to follow, either as a short walk or a difficult day trek, cross the town. Most of the tracks have a length of 10 to 16 kilometres and different grades.
Universidade de Coimbra: The Universidade de Coimbra is the oldest seat of learning in Portugal, established by King Dinis in 1290. The ancient buildings of the Velha Universidade, or old Coimbra University, surround a beautiful colonnaded central square, the Paço das Escolas, listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. The university's Alta and Sofia wings-a former royal residence-reward visitors with a variety of star features, including the amazing Joanina Library, a sumptuously decorated library built by King João V. in 1717.
The dazzlingly ornate 16th-century Capela de São Miguel also hosts a tour. For a grand view over Coimbra, one of the most glamorous cities in the world, anyone with a head for heights can ascend the landmark 18th-century clock tower.
Torre de Clérigos, Oporto: One of the defining landmarks of Oporto is the spindly, needle-like Torre de Clérigos. This slender tower was designed in the 18th century by Nicolau Nasoni and exudes a brazen sense of the Baroque, standing 75 metres above the streets and overlooking the old town. The tower, built as part of the Igreja dos Clérigos, was completed in 1763 and was the tallest building in Porto at that time. Visitors must climb up to 200 stairs to reach the summit, but the huffing and puffing will all be forgotten as you enjoy truly beautiful views of the city and the Douro River.
Alentejo landscape in spring : One of the best things to do in the Alentejo is to explore the area on horseback, whether following a narrow, gurgling stream; traversing a flower-flecked meadow; or plodding over a soft, sandy track.
The province is known for its love affair with horses-this part of Portugal is synonymous with the beautiful and mild-mannered Lusitano breed, particularly in towns such as Alter do Chão, home to the Coudelaria de Alter stud. In the countryside or along the coast, leisurely rides can be enjoyed, led by experienced guides who were literally born in the saddle. Inland, head for places like Alcácer do Sal, on the River Sado, and Ourique, situated deep in the forested hinterland. Comporta is a favourite seaside destination.
