Nasik is a Hindu religious town, hosted every 12 years by the Kumbh Mela. Nashik (Nasik), named after a relic associated with Ramayana, is a city situated on the banks of the Godavari River in Maharashtra. Every 12 years, Nashik plays host to the popular Kumbh Mela. The town is home to many exotic temples and is popular as the place where Ravana's niece, Surpanakha, attempted to seduce Lord Ram and got her nose cut off in the process by Lakshman in Hindu mythology.
There, its religious meaning does not end. It also plays host to the thousands of tourists visiting Shirdi and Trimbakeshwar. Nashik also has forts, waterfalls and vineyards to look out for, apart from its temples. The wine-tourism sector is mushrooming in this part of Maharashtra with multiple vineyards present in Nashik, the most common being Sula.
Panchvati draws many pilgrims to the holy land of the believers of Ramayana. In the epic of Ramayana, a serene town near Nasik, the site offers small sightings with a lot of significance. The place holds a lot of religious significance even in the present day, considering the legend of Panchvati. There are places like the Kalaram Temple and the Sita Gufaa on every list of pilgrims. The Kumbh Mela takes place on the banks of the Godavari River and, during the occasion, has a surplus of pilgrims from every corner of the world.
Dhudsagar falls, considered one of the best falls in the view, provides a panoramic view with a stunning landscape. During the monsoon season, the cascade is in full verve and a quiet sight to behold.
Around 60 km from Nasik, Saptashrungi is a Hindu pilgrimage location. The temple of the goddess Saptashrungi Nivasin is also half of the three and a half Shaktipeeths in Maharashtra, the 'Shaktipeeth.' One of the limbs of Sati's right arm (Lord Shiva 's wife) is believed to have fallen here. Seven mountain peaks with 108 bodies of water called kundas and forests filled with medicinal herbs are surrounded by Saptashrungi.
One of the twelve Jyotirlingas in India is Trimbakeshwar Temple. This Shaiva temple, located in Trimbak, 28 kilometres from Nashik city, is at the foot of the Brahmagiri Hills. The temple, founded in the 18th century by the Maratha ruler, Peshwa Nana Saheb, is mentioned in the powerful Mrityunjaya Mantra that grants immortality and longevity.
The temple premises, built in classical architecture, also mention the Kusavarta or Kunda, which is said to be the source of the Godavari river. The three faces symbolising Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu and Lord Rudra are a fascinating aspect of the Jyotirlinga. In the core area or 'garbhgriha' of the temple, only male devotees are permitted.
The Pandavleni Caves, also known as Pandu Caves or Nasik Caves, are ancient rock-cut caves located on the tableland of the Trivashmi Hills, located about 8 kilometres south of the centre of Nashik in Maharashtra , India. The time between the 3rd century BC and the 2nd century AD dates back to these caves. A group of 24 caves reflecting Hinayana Buddhism are the Pandavleni caves.
The mystic caves are also made up of musical fountains, museums and numerous food outlets. You can also find some monasteries, shrines, water reservoirs, walls, and carvings inside.
The Pandavleni Caves were built for the Hinayana Buddhist monks by prominent rulers of that period, such as the Satavahanas and Kshaharatas. In all the twenty-four caves, the most stunning are caves 3 and 10. These caves' architecture is distinctive and impressive. The interior of these caves also consists of inscriptions that have served until this day as valuable study material for researchers and scholars. There is an inscription about the King of Western Maharashtra in cave number 15.
Sita Gufa, said to be the place from where Sita was abducted by Ravana, is near Panchvati. To the tunnels, a narrow staircase leads. The caves house Lord Ram, Sita and Lakshman idols, as well as a Shivling, said to be the one Sita worshipped.
A sprawling and elaborate structure called the Jain Temple is a recent addition to the religious sphere in Nasik. The building consists of three floors and is largely made of white marble and pink sand. The 12 tonne strong deity of the 24th of Thirthankara of the Jains can be found here.
Believed to be Lord Hanuman 's birthplace, Anjaneri derives its name from Anjani, the mother of Hanuman. Perched in the picturesque Nashik-Trimbakeshwar mountain range, the fortress of Anjaneri is about 20 km from Nashik. Anjaneri is also a popular spot for hikers, apart from its spiritual significance.
This one derives its name from the black statue of Lord Rama, one of the city's most important religious centres. A black statue of Lord Hanuman and statues of Sita and Lakshman can also be found within the temple. The temple, host to a Dalit movement in history, also has allowed guides to take you around the structure. A nearby attraction is Kapileshwara temple.
One of the oldest instances of this pilgrim area, this is a Shiva temple surrounded by a hint of mystery due to the absence of a statue of Nandi Bull, typically found in all Shiva Temples. This is one of the most visited temples in the city , near to the Kalaram temple.
The Gangapur Dam is an earthen dam on the Godavari River and Asia's longest earthen reservoir. People come here to spend a relaxing afternoon in the riverside garden, enjoying the river's blissful, picturesque landscape, straight out of a fantasy. In the evening, it is possible to spot migratory birds and there is a new boating facility to draw more visitors.
Deolali camp is a small hill station spread all around it, away from the cacophony of urban towns. In this small, secluded town as well, the greeneries of Sahyadri have left their mark. Since the days of the British, this famous weekend getaway within about 150 kilometres of major cities such as Mumbai and Pune has been an important military base. In fact, it is among the country's oldest military cantonments. The reason individuals visit Deolali the most, however, is because of its healing factor.
Nasik is known for its shopping streets and is the shopaholics' bumper lottery. A number of items can be found, ranging from handicrafts, silver items, souvenirs to ancient copper remains and brass statues. This wine town is also well-known for its grapes and wine from Chivda.
