Manali is a tourist town nestled near the northern end of the Kullu Valley in the Beas River Valley in the mountains of the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh. It is located about 270 km (168 mi) north of the state capital, Shimla, 309 km (192 miles) northeast of Chandigarh and 544 km (338 miles) northeast of the national capital, Delhi, in the Kullu district.
In the area, the British introduced apple trees. The British founded the first apple orchard near Patlikuhal, before which no apple trees had grown in the area. Together with plum and pear, apple remains the best source of income for most inhabitants to this day. The settlers also introduced both the Rainbow and Brown Trout into the rivers and streams of the area.
Manali has seen a flurry of hydroelectric power and tourism-related activity. Unplanned and rampant development has resulted in extreme forest degradation and river body contamination, along with waste being disposed of on the side of the mountains. Various species of fauna have lost their habitat, not restricted to the Himalayan Monal, the state bird of Himachal Pradesh, incidentally.
Valley of Solang, Manali : Two totally important destinations in the itinerary are Rohtang and Solang Valley while going to Manali for a holiday. The Solang Valley, 14 kilometres northwest of the main town of Manali, is one of Himachal Pradesh's most popular tourist destinations. Situated on the way from Manali to Rohtang, the valley welcomes tourists in large numbers every year.
Solang valley is a popular sport here during the winters, with training institutes and trainers located in the valley to supervise skiers and train beginners. Skiing is taken over by Zorbing when the snow melts. You are likely to spot a big transparent ball with mostly two people inside it rolling down the slope during summers, another common attraction of Solang Valley, taking advantage of the slopes of the valley.
Rohtang Pass is a favourite among the group of film directors due to its splendid natural beauty. Many of the blockbusters were filmed here, ranging from 'Jab We Met' to 'Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani.' A curious truth behind the name of the place is that it was named so because, when attempting to cross this treacherous stretch, a number of people employed in CBRE died.Without a sledge ride, which involves sliding through the snow on a wooden toboggan, a snow experience can never be complete.
Manali 's Adventure Activities: In Himachal Pradesh, Manali is the centre of adventure activities. Manali has everything to offer, from white river rafting to trekking opportunities to zorbing to horse-riding to skiing to paragliding.
Trek of Beas Kund : Manali is also the route to one of the most undertaken treks-the Beas Kund Trek-apart from being popular as a tourist destination. This trek is a great getaway plan for the weekend that will take you away from the hustle and bustle of city life. Take the opportunity to feast your eyes on the magnificent views of the Pir Pinjal mountain ranges over the Beas River, let your soul be wooed by the magnificent meadows of Dhundi and Bakarthach, and finally, the Beas Kund glacial lake.
Paragliding : Manali, a hillside town, is popular for paragliding. At 2050 metres above sea level, with its lush green valleys, strong blue skies, and snow-capped mountain peaks, it is the perfect place for sport. The picture-perfect valley boasts perfect paragliding wind conditions and is thronged by foreign and domestic visitors. The operators are well organised, knowledgeable and trustworthy, beginning with a basic training course.
Manali skiing : Manali, a major tourist spot in North India, is renowned for its excellent skiing conditions, with skiing enthusiasts coming from all over the country. Solang Valley and Rohtang Pass's undulating slopes give a great terrain for amateurs to learn their first move, while Manali is an ideal base for experienced skiing. So, if you are an adventure lover, leave yourself in the hands of your experienced trainers in the picturesque setting of Manal to experience the thrill of skiing.
Trek Chandratal Baralacha : Chandratal Baralacha is a great trekking destination, one of the high altitude lakes in the Himalayan region, steeped in Chandratal. The most delightful sight of sunset shining on the turquoise waters of the lake, pristine scenery, mountain passes, many gushing streams, green meadows, the gush of colourful orchards and exotic wildlife make Chandratal Baralacha Trek an unforgotten experience to cherish forever, situated on the Samudra Plateau of Spiti Valley.
Temple of Hadimba, Manali : The Hadimba Temple, situated among the snow-covered hills of Manali, is a unique shrine dedicated to Hidimba Devi, who was Bhima 's wife and Ghatothkach 's mother. Surrounded by beautiful cedar forests, this beautiful shrine is constructed on a rock that is believed to be the image of the goddess Hidimba herself. The construction style of the Hidimba Devi temple is totally different from that of any of the other temples, locally known as the Dhungari Temple.
Baths at Vashisht : Vashisht Baths is a hot water spring, thought to possess medicinal values, located within the very popular Vashisht Temple in Manali. It is also known as Vashisht Baths, and many visitors frequent it, many of whom take a dip in the holy water to get rid of skin diseases and infections. For men and women, the government has made provisions for separate bathing areas. The Vashisht Spring area is surrounded by hundreds of small shops where souvenirs can be purchased.
Great National Park of the Himalayans : One of India's national parks, located in Himachal Pradesh's Kullu area, is the Great Himalayan National Park. It is home to over 375 species of wildlife, 31 species of mammals and 181 species of birds. Thanks to the Deodar and Oak trees, this magnificent location of the national park is all the more appealing.
Sahib Manikaran : There are three hot springs where one can take a bath, one being privatised by the guesthouses within the Gurudwara itself and the other two. At the bathing spot, different parts are made for men and women. The water containing sulphur in these springs is capable of curing diseases. There are religious and philosophical practises related to it again in the hot springs. By directly positioning the vessels, the water is hot enough to cook food and is served as langar.
Trek's Hampta Pass : The place is easy to reach, a great trek for beginners, and the adventurous experience of crossing the pass is literally exhilarating. This one starts from Manali town and not from a remote village, unlike most treks. The highlight of the trip is Chandratal, a crystal clear lake situated at high altitudes and a rare sight to behold. Hampta Pass trek in the lap of the Himalayas, a journey of around 4-5 days, is one of the thrilling trips that will leave you fully awake.
Tourists arriving in Kullu and Manali will enjoy a range of adventure sports such as river rafting, trekking, mountaineering, etc. The area that houses the airport and bus junction, Bhuntar, is used as the base city to enter.
Chandrakhani : Located in the Kullu Valley at an altitude of 3660 m, Chandrakhani Pass offers tourists a fabulous view of the mountain ranges of Deo Tibba Peak, Pir Panjal and Parbati. The trip to this region introduces you to the numerous hilly cultures that are extremely common in Himachal Pradesh. You have to pass through Malana, which welcomes you with its small settlements and lush greenery, to enter the serene pass.
