In adoring a holy Linga called the Atma-Linga, the Hindu gods achieved immortality and invincibility. By possessing the Atma-Linga (Soul of Shiva), the Lanka king Ravana decided to gain immortality. Ravana worshipped Shiva with dedication, as Atma-Linga belonged to Shiva. Shiva appeared before him, delighted by his prayers, and asked him what he wanted. Ravana asked Atma-Linga for it. On the condition that it should never be placed on the earth, Shiva decided to give him the boon.
Ravana returned to find that the Atma-linga had already been set on the ground by Ganesha. Then Vishnu removed his delusion, and again, it was daytime. Ravana attempted to uproot and kill the linga, discovering that he had been fooled. Some bits were dispersed because of the force exerted by Ravana. In present-day Surathkal, one such piece from the head of the linga is said to have fallen.
