A big tourist attraction zone has always been Theni, located in Southern Tamil Nadu. It is a spectacular place to visit with its great dams, massive waterfalls, numerous pilgrim centres, attractive temples with thick silver-lined clouds. The beautiful green hills of Theni are home to a wide range of unique flora. There are three main taluks in the area, called Periyakulam, Uthamapalayam and Andipatti.
Theni is one of the most picturesque towns in Tamil Nadu, laced with dense vegetation and beautiful streams. It is considered to be the home of several rivers, namely Vaigai, Kottagudi, Suruliyar, Varahanathi, Manjalar and Varattaru. Theni is lined with magnificent dams such as Manjalaru Dam, Sothuparai Dam, Shanmuganathi Dam, Manalaru Dam and Melmanalaru Dam, courtesy of Theni.
The majestic Western Ghats surround this district, including its broad green stretches of cultivated farm land and tea gardens. For its great coffee seeds and cardamaom, Theni is renowned. Prior to visiting Theni, both these things should be on your must-try list. The state is also renowned for its rich silk production, soft towels and mangoes.
MEGHAMALAI : Meghamalai, also known as the High Wavy Mountains, lies at an altitude of 1,500 m. Because of its fantastic tea estates and rich pepper, cardamom and cinnamon plantations, visiting this beautiful place is important. Near Meghamalai, there is also a thick forest where magnificent animals such as the sambar, tiger, leopard, elephant, as well as cheetahs, gaur and spotted deer can be found.
BODINAYAKKANUR : Bodinayakkanur is one of the most famous towns in Theni, situated in the foothills of the amazing Western Ghats. The place has a great history, as it was captured by Hyder Ali and subsequently surrendered to the East India Company in 1793. As a result of its daily cardamom, mango, tea , coffee, silk and cotton markets, Bodinayakkanur is also a shopper 's delight.
FALLS SURULI : Suruli falls drops gathering into a pool from a height of 150 feet, flowing for a short distance, and again dropping to a depth of 40 feet, providing a stunning view of the raw and wild beauty of nature. This is a 'year-round' decline that draws visitors across the year. June to October is the best season for the best water flow.
Kumbakkarai : The Kumbakkarai Fall originated in the Kodaikanal Hills of the Western Ghats. It lies in a location named Kumbakkarai, 9 km from the small town of Periyakulam. It is approximately 24 km from Theni. In a natural set-up where the chirping of birds welcomes tourists, the waterfall is located.
Two stages constitute the Kumbakkarai Decline. Water plumages from a height of 400 m are collected in the enormous rock alcoves named after wild animals. Near the collapse is a statue of Lord Murugan. In the fall, tourists love to take a swim. To lead you to the fall, it is advisable to take support from a local individual as the rock recesses are a little risky to tread on. Kumbakkarai Falls can be visited at any time of year, but it gushes out with maximum force during the monsoon season.
Kuchanur : Kuchanur is famous for the Temple of Sani, one of the temples dedicated solely to Lord Sani, without the other accompanying planets or the temple 's ruling deity. Lord Sani is believed to have appeared in Swayambu or to have appeared in this position naturally.
Therefore, from the word Kubjanoor, one of the names of Lord Sani, which later became Kuchanur, the place received its name. Kuchanur also houses the temple of Vadaguru, dedicated to Lord Guru, facing north. This temple is fairly ancient, and legends claim that the god of this temple was worshipped by Lord Indra.
There is also a temple dedicated to Lord Hanuman where there is also a deity with five faces in this temple of Pancha Mukha Ganapathi or Lord Ganesh. The Surabhi Rivulet flows through the village of Kuchanur, and on the bank of this small river stands the Sani Temple.
Kuchanur lies approximately 20 km from Theni. Every year, thousands of devotees from all parts of India come to Kuchanur to visit this temple to get relief from Sani 's malicious effects.
Bodi Mettu is an idyllic hill station in Tamil Nadu's Theni district. It sits at a height of around 4500 ft above sea level on the lap of the Western Ghats. This is a beautiful tourist spot and hundreds of tourists come to this hill station every year to spend a relaxing time here. Bodi Mettu is abundant in biodiversity and flora. Many uncommon bird and animal species are sighted here. It is 43 km from Theni and lies on the way from Theni to Bodinayakkanur.
Theertha Thotti : Theni is about 19 km from Theertha Thotti and Periyakulam is only 2 km away. From Theni on the Madurai – Kochi National Highway, it falls on the road to Bodinayakkanur. As the Lord Subramaniar Temple is situated there, it is a popular pilgrimage centre.
This temple is 1000 years old or so. Theertha Thotti means pool of holy water. This is a natural spring surrounded by bright trees and neem trees. A tank called Theertha Thotti is amidst these trees. This tank is a natural spring which is called sacred and has never gone dry. There is an inner mandapam in the tank and a staircase which goes down.
The walls of Theertha Thotti are carved with the figurines of Saptha Kannikas, or the seven Lord Murugan and Vinayaka adoring virgins.
The Temple of Gowmariamman is a temple founded by Pandya King Veerapandiya IV in the 14th century. Local beliefs claim that by worshipping Gowmariamman and Kanneeswaramudaiyar, King Veerapandiya regained his vision. It is believed that Gowmari, the consecrated goddess of the temple, fulfils the desires of the devotees and heals them from various illnesses and diseases. During the Tamil month of Chithirai, the Gowmariamman Temple 's main festival falls in April and May and is celebrated for 8 days.
Gowmariamman Temple is situated in a village called Veerapandi, 8 km away from Theni. It sits on the banks of the Mullai river.
In the picturesque setting of the Kodaikanal Hills, the Sothupparai Dam, constructed across the Varaga River, is located. This place is a wonderful place for picnics and outings with friends and family, located some 12 km from Periyakulam. On both sides, the road to the dam is adorned with mango trees.
