Savona : Every departure and arrival of Costa ships sailing in the Mediterranean is greeted by the Priamar Fortress above the port of Savona. Nearby is Genoa and its aquarium.
The port of Savona is one of the most beautiful locations on the Italian Riviera. Savona is an excellent base for exploring Liguria because of the beautiful climate, summers that are never too hot, mild winters and the exceptional beauty of the sea near the town. Savona is famous for the Priamar Castle, which has been dominating the city since the 16th century, as well as for its historic centre, where you can visit the Cathedral of Savona. A visit to the nearby city of Genoa and its narrow, picturesque streets known as 'caruggi' can also be an opportunity to stop in Savona.

From October 10 to November 7 , 2020, the one-week itinerary of the Costa Smeralda will have five departures from Savona dedicated to the rediscovery, in safety, of the best of Italy, with calls to La Spezia, Cagliari, Naples, Messina and Civitavecchia / Rome. This is a real homecoming for Costa Smeralda after the Covid-19 emergency pause, as Savona has always been her home port since December 21, 2020, when, after leaving the Meyer shipyard in Turku where she was built, she made her first cruise.
Starting with the first call at La Spezia, it is only possible to visit the destinations on the itinerary of the Costa Smeralda by joining the company's covered excursions arranged for small groups of people on sanitised means of transport and subject to temperature calculation before leaving and rejoining the vessel.
On February 22, in Savona, Italy, a new LNG-powered flagship operated by the Italian cruise line Costa Cruises was called Costa Smeralda.
The ship's godmother was international star Penélope Cruz, who, in the presence of the Master of the Costa Smeralda, Paolo Benini, conducted the ribbon-cutting duties with the typical smashing of the bottle against the bow of the ship.
In December last year, delivered to Costa Cruises by Finnish shipbuilder Meyer Turku, the ship was identified as a 'traveling smart city' in which sustainable technologies and principles of the circular economy are applied to reduce the environmental footprint and encourage sustainable cruising.
The cruise ship is able to virtually remove emissions of sulphur dioxide and particulate matter while greatly reducing emissions of nitrogen oxides and CO2 with its technological propulsion system based on LNG, the most advanced fuel technology currently available to minimise emissions. On board, special desalination plants directly treat seawater to fulfil everyday water supply needs and, thanks to an intelligent energy management system, energy consumption is reduced to a minimum.
Michael Thamm, Group CEO of Costa Group , which includes Costa, Germany's brand, AIDA Cruises, and Carnival Asia, said, "It is a pleasure to officially welcome Costa Smeralda to our fleet,"
(W)e are committed to being the first to incorporate environmental innovation and lead the way for the cruise industry in sustainable cruising. We were the first company to invest in LNG and are currently working to develop other sustainable technologies from renewable energy sources, such as battery storage, fuel cells and liquefied gas.
The Costa Group was the world's first cruise operator to invent the LNG propulsion system and has ordered a total of five new LNG-fueled ships, two of which are already in service — Costa Smeralda and AIDAnova. With a total of seven new ships planned for delivery by 2023 and an overall investment worth over EUR 6 billion ( USD 6.5 billion), they are part of the Costa Group's fleet expansion programme.
On December 21, 2019, Costa Smeralda entered operation and is operating in the Western Mediterranean on a one-week route with calls to Savona, Marseille, Barcelona, Palma de Mallorca, Civitavecchia / Rome and La Spezia.

Around 35 km (22 ml) from Genoa Airport, around 220 km (135 ml) from Malpensa Airport (Milan) and about 160 km (100 ml) from Nice (Cote d'Azur, French Riviera) are located in Savona.

The city is not flashy, but with its past, unique architecture and long beaches, it attracts many foreign tourists. From 1-4 pm, most shops don't operate. The key attractions of the city include the Cathedral of Assunta, Cappella Sistina (15th century chapel with Pope Sixtus IV's Mausoleum), Nostra Signora di Castello (church), Nostra Signora della Misericordia Sanctuary, Leon Pancaldo Tower, Brandale Tower, Priamar Fortress (16th century), Palazzo Della Rovere, Palazzo Gavotti, Palazzo Delle Piane.
The pleasant truth is that Christopher Columbus (1451-1506), the Italian colonist, settled here to document the history of his American trips. Savona is ranked by annual passengers as Italy's 4th largest cruise port (1.3 million in 2013). The seaport is adjacent to the historic centre of the city and its maritime trade has been of vital importance to the economy of the Liguria Region since the Middle Ages.
Big firms, Corsica-Sardinia Ferries (to Corsica) and Grimaldi Lines (to Barcelona and Tangier), have regular ferry connexions from Savona. Ferries have 14 weekly crossings to Bastia and 1 weekly crossing to Ile Rousse, Barcelona and Tangier.
