It's one of the unknown treks we know about in the Western Ghats. We discovered that it develops with a tremendous amount of wildlife and stunning mountain valleys when Nature Walkers explored this trek. We found it was the best bird-watching trek you could see as a bird. Wild elephant herds, monkeys jumping from one tree to another and other animals (bison, sloth bears, bonnet macaques, Nilgiri langur and Nilgiri Tahr) could also be seen.
It is a two-day trek event in which we will trek to our 1st check post on the first day and rest there at night and then the next trek to the last check post on the trek. It covers the trail, the thick forest, the coffee farm, the meadow path, the tea farm. You might claim, for Western Ghats trek lovers, this is the "all in one" option.
Kurangani Hill Station is situated in the Theni district of Tamil Nadu, near Bodinayakanur. In the midst of the commonly explored Western Ghats, this lesser-known gem of a place also holds a precipitous ledge at the height point of 8782 ft. called Kolukkumalai, considered one of the world's highest tea estates.
The trek appeals to photographers, birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts alike with a varied flora and fauna to boast. The path takes you across a large expanse of tea gardens on a zigzag road. A large range of chirping birds and animals including Nilgiri langur, Nilgiri Tahr, monkeys and Gaurs (Indian Bison) are most likely to be spotted. Wild cats and elephant herds are a rarity, but who knows, you could cross paths with one in the thick canopies and sylvan surroundings.
We're going to pass two check posts during the two-day walk, spending the night at the first check post. With the view of the lush tea plantations in the backdrop, observe a welcoming sunrise. Prepared to be delighted by myriad landscapes as you cross grasslands, meadows, plantations of tea and coffee and thick Kurangani trees.
We are going to hit the starting point in the early morning. We will begin hiking to our first campsite, the Central Station, which is about 7 km from Kurinjini Village, after a refreshing breakfast.
Our route will take a sharp deviation into the forest after hiking on the Jeep track, taking us to a cascading waterfall. At the waterfalls, the soothing break is sure to take your exhaustion away. You will find a Lilting Rivulet leading you to your home as you step on towards the old coffee estate farmhouse.
The jungle will start looking lighter near the campsite, and anywhere you look, the colour green will prevail. Enjoy the Thick Jungle Coming Alive with the Birds, Insects and Small Animals Singing. When you move through lush plantations of familiar crops and trees such as teak, eucalyptus, bamboo, coffee, banana, mango, sapota, plum, orange, parsley, pomegranate, carrot, tapioca and cashew nut, the vegetation grows in the Sylvan environment quite unexpectedly.
After a 2.5 km walk from the Estate Farmhouse, we can hit the Central Station Check Post waiting for us to have a hot lunch. We'd explore a little more of this Stunning Mountains and Landscapes area after lunch. With the Sip of Coffee and Tea Right from the Estate, Indulge in Satiating Your Senses as the Evening Falls. Everything You Would Need after that is a Hearty Dinner in the Lap of Nature and a Quiet Night.
Close your eyes to the sunrise's mesmerising vision, experience the whiff of fresh mountain air, and fill your ears with the music of a number of birds' tweets and chirps. We'll start with a 7 km long trek to the Top Station or Kurangani Peak after a hearty breakfast to fuel our energy.
In a strange zigzag pattern, this trail from the Central Station to the Top Station will possibly be dizzying as you cross the mountain side-walk. What is more enticing about this trail, however, is the striking view of the valley below as you steadily gain altitude.
Be patient and cool, and a variety of unusual bird species will be seen on the trek. These include Red Whiskered Bulb, Veriditer Flycatcher, Blue Flycatcher of Tickell, Oriental White Eye, Purple-rumped Sunbird, Keep a note of what you may spot out of them.
After covering about 4 km, before the final climb to the summit, we will stop at a resting point. As you start to peak, gather your energy and contain your enthusiasm.
The Mesmerising Panoramic View from the Top Station can make you feel at the top of the world when you hit the pinnacle. The Domineering Hills of Kurangani will appear to loom over the surface of the Earth through the Pool of Floating Clouds, leaving you spellbound.
We will begin descending the mountain by absorbing the beauty and serenity of the area. We will head homewards with many memories to treasure and in the hope that nature keeps mesmerising us with its splendid self.
