It is a booming business metropolis set in one of Java's most beautiful locations. The city is best known for its delicious local food, but Surabaya has more to offer than its restaurants. You can watch traditional bull races within a few hours from the area, see the sun rise over Bromo Volcano and visit the tumbling waterfalls of Madakaripura. Here is a list of 15 things to do in (and around) Surabaya on your holiday to help you make the most of your time.

Midnight Tour by Bromo : Bromo is an active volcano and one of East Java 's tourism highlights. In Bromo Tengger National Park, a region renowned for its striking scenery, the volcano is located. Most tourists from Surabaya who want to visit Bromo join the 'Bromo Midnight Tour' so they can watch the sun rising from behind the volcano. It's one of the bucket list and should be at the top of your Surabaya list of things to do. Jiwa Jawa resort (luxury option) is recommended if you are planning to stay close to Bromo.

Museum Sampoerna : It's odd to suggest a cigarette factory museum as the best thing to do in Surabaya, but the Museum of Sampoerna easily tops the list. Let's start at the beginning ... Sampoerna is a popular brand of Surabaya Clove Cigarettes. The Museum records the company's past and is also a functional cigarette factory.

In a grand colonial era building, the Sampoerna Museum is located. The building's downstairs section houses the museum. There are plenty of displays, many from the family collection, and old photographs. You can see how the business began and how Sampoerna 's advertisement has evolved over time when you visit the museum. A viewing room over the functioning cigarette factory is on the second floor of the Museum (it's a mesmerising sight to see!). A free tourism bus around Surabaya is also run by the Museum.

Kartiko at Pasar Atom Traditional Food: In Surabaya, food is a huge thing. Really, if you're asking people, what are the best things to do in Surabaya? Kartiko is one of the few places in Surabaya that still sells traditional Surabaya food & snacks. Kartiko offers a wide variety of the city's popular sweet and savoury cuisine. It is always busy and the food is (and cheap) delicious. Definitely add this to your Surabaya list of things to do!

The Bull Runs against Madura : Just off the Java coast, the island of Madura is situated. On the island, buffalo races are held from July through August. The races are held as a way for the rice harvest to be celebrated. You can try visiting the bull races if you are in the area between these times. It's a 3-4 hour drive from Surabaya, so on a day trip, or overnight trip, you're going to have to do it, but it's definitely worth it. The bull races (and possibly more common than football in Madura) are as special as they are rare.

Majapahit Tea : You can probably visit the Majapahit Hotel if you want to visit any of the historical landmarks of Surabaya. The hotel, surrounded by manicured lawns, is housed in a grand colonial mansion. With polished floors and marble baths, the mansion dates back to 1910 and still maintains its classic atmosphere. For high tea and sandwiches, the perfect time to visit the Majapahit Hotel is in the afternoon. From 2-6 pm, the hotel serves tea. You will need to reserve your position one day before, if you come in a big group.

Taman Bungkul Bungkul : You can visit Taman Bungkul if you are looking for a bit of greenery in Surabaya. The park is one of Surabaya 's main parks and a small tranquilly pool close to the centre of the city. Located close to the Shangri-La Hotel, Taman Bungkul costs Rp 5,000 per person to join. At any time of day, you can visit it. In the evenings, the park is busiest when you see couples walking around and sitting on the benches.

National Bridge of Suramadu : One of the longest bridges in South East Asia (the longest at the moment in Indonesia) is the Suramadu National Bridge. Surabaya links the bridge with the island of Madura. The Suramadu National Bridge can be seen from most points on the Surabaya waterfront. The best time to see it is at night, when multi-colored lights are lit up. If you want to visit Madura, you can try visiting the island from July to October, when the annual bull races take place. Visit the Monument of Surabaya

Surabaya 's symbol is an image of a crocodile and a whale. It comes from two words, Sura and Baya, in Sanskrit. Whale means Sura, and crocodile means Baya. The two animals symbolise peace and war, according to legend. In Surabaya, there are two sculptures of this symbol. For many tourists who visit the area, it's a popular place for pictures.

See the Chinese Cheng Hoo Mosque : Surabaya has a large Chinese Indonesian community, many of whom originally came as traders to the region. The Cheng Hoo Mosque is a testimony to how the Chinese have blended their heritage into the local society, accepting the local faith, while retaining a sense of their heritage. You can see it in the décor anywhere. The mosque is decorated in bright red , yellow and green colours. There is a traditional pagoda at the entrance to the mosque that incorporates motifs of dragons and lions.

Taking part in the Persebaya Game : Many Indonesians are passionate about their local clubs and one of the largest in the world, Persebaya, is in the city of Surabaya. Persebaya Football Club plays at Gelora Bung Tomo Stadium while they are at home. The stadium has a capacity of 50,000, which gives the home games plenty of atmosphere, so you should certainly try to attend a Persebaya game if you love football and you are passing through the city.

Artama III Harbour Cruise : Surabaya is a major seaport and one of the city's most fascinating ways to discover and see exactly what this means by joining a Harbour Cruise on Artama III. The cruise takes approximately 2 hours and follows the busy port and under the famous bridge (Suramadu Bridge) along the waterfront of the city. From 9 am to 11 am, the cruise operates every Sunday and costs Rp 120,000 per passenger.

Visiting the Malls : You might well find yourself in one of the many malls in one of the cities if you are visiting Surabaya and you are looking for a place to do some shopping or just catch a movie. That isn't a bad thing. Malls are a major part of Indonesia's urban society. Malls are a place where people come to meet, hang out and socialise with each other. If you want a recommendation on where to visit Surabaya, Tunjungan Plaza and Ciputra World Surabaya are two of the best malls in the region.

Monkasel U-boat : The Monkasel is a Russian submarine that, shortly after Indonesian independence, saw service in the Indonesian navy. The submarine was transformed into a tourist attraction after being decommissioned. In the heart of Surabaya, on Pemuda Street near the bank of the Kalimas River, the Monkasel now rests. You can also get into the submarine and take an interior tour.
