Palani Temple : Vaikasi Visagam, Festival
Vaikasi Visagam, or Vaigasi Visakam, is the day of the incarnation on earth of Lord Muruga or Karttikeya. Skanda, Kanda, Subrahmanya, and Karttikeya are also known as Muruga, the general of the Army of Devas. In the Tamil month of Vaikasi (May – June), the birthday of Lord Muruga falls on the Vishakam star. In India, Malaysia, Singapore, Sri Lanka and South Africa, the day is celebrated in temples dedicated to Muruga.
The devas (gods) were forced out of heaven by the demon Surapadman, according to Puranas, with the aid of boons he got from Brahma. Unable to defeat Surapadman, Indra, the Devas' king, sought Brahma's aid. But Brahma was only able to narrate his helplessness because by extreme penance, Surapadman had already received boons from Brahma.
But a way out was suggested by Brahma and that was to seek Lord Shiva's aid. An angered Shiva opened his third eye when Indra recounted Surapadman's cruel deeds and the fiery sparks that came out that turned into six infants. Later, Goddess Parvati joined the six children into one and thus incarnated Lord Muruga with the intention of destroying the demons.
On the day, devotees take a procession to Subrahmanya temples holding milk pots. The milk is used for the deity's 'abhishekam.' Some devotees on the day also take kavadi. Thousands of devotees visit Vaikasi Visakam's Lord Muruga shrine, particularly at Tiruchendur's Lord Subramanya Swami Temple and at Tirupparankundram's Muruga Temple.
Kanda Sashti festival:
Lord Muruga's favourite days are Sashti, or the sixth day of the full moon, and the sixth day of the new moon. On each Sashti day and during the Kanda Sashti season, many Muruga devotees observe partially or completely fast. The Sashti falling into the waxing moon phase in the month of Aippasi (October-November) is the day on which a super-demon named Sura Padman is believed to have been killed by Muruga.
This is celebrated as a symbol of the everlasting destruction of evil by God at the six-day Kanda Sashti festival. Skanda Sasti, the sixth day of the bright half of the month of Aippasi, is celebrated in Saivite temples in Tamilnadu, and in temples dedicated to Subramanya with an extra measure of grandeur. Skanda Sasti commemorates Supreme General Kartikeya, son of Shivadefeat ,'s of evil and is celebrated with the dramatic enactment of Soora Samhaaram.
By tradition, each of these six days is set apart from one of the six scriptures in his praise, Tirumurukarruppadai, Kandar Kalivenba, Kandar Anubhuti, Kandar Alank?r?m, Kanda Sashti Kavacam, and Kanda Puranam, to recite the glory of Muruga. On uplifted chariots, giant-sized images of four asuras are moved and those met and killed by the King.
The utsava deity of Chinnakum?rar comes down from the hill temple for this festival and for this only, destroying the asuras at four-way corners while on a festive procession around the hill and returning triumphantly to His hill dwelling. This is the sixth day, the day of Sashti, i.e. All the other festival activities take place at the temple on the hill.
Muruga marries Valli on the seventh day. Both in the hill temple and in the Periyan?yaki Temple, this sacred marriage is celebrated.
