History Of The Town : Dindigul's most prominent historical landmark is the Rock Fort, which is situated atop a hill. King Muthu Krishna Naicker of Madurai began the construction of the fort in 1605 and completed it from 1623 to 1659. Hyder Ali, his wife and his son, Tipu Sultan, arrived in Dindigul in 1755.From 1784 to 1790, Tipu Sultan administered the fort. In 1784, the commandant of Tipu Sultan renovated the fort to build many rooms and reinforce the walls. In the Mysore War of 1790, the English defeated the Tipu Sultan, and the fort fell under them.
