Designed according to the ancient Indian construction manual, Shilpa Shastra, the temple is the city's epicentre. It is Tamil Nadu's largest temple complex and is divided into a number of concentric quadrangular enclosures contained by high walls of stonework. In four directions, it has four entrances. There are 14 gopurams (gateway towers), two gold sculptured vimanas, 33,000 sculptures, Porthamarai Kulam, the holy temple tank, and many halls in the complex. The Kal Mandapam Ayiram is a must see.
Devotees line up for darshan or viewing of the deities inside the temple. Non-Hindus are not allowed to reach the inner sanctum of Meenakshi or Sundareshwarar; attendants will pull anyone who looks suspicious out of line. There is an abundance of sculpture and painting available to all, however. In addition, the Pottramaraikulam or Golden Lotus Pond steps are open to all and, in addition to pilgrims and visitors, are a popular meeting place for city dwellers.
One could try any of the rooftop restaurants on West Perumal Maistry Lane, near the Railway Station, to get a glimpse of the beautiful night view of the temple and the city. Don't skip the typical snacks served after sunset by street vendors across the temple, new and attractively displayed. The blissful fragrance of jasmine can be found nowhere, except in Madurai.
