The town of Theni in Tamil Nadu, almost always engulfed in foggy mist, has begun to emerge as a prominent tourist destination in South India. Every morning, as the sunlight brightens up, thinning the lining of fog, Theni transforms into a wonderful green carpet covering significant parts of the lofty Western Ghats. With a strong fragrance from the neatly lined cardamom, coffee and tea plantations, the air that contributes to the charm of the city is packed.
Theni is sure to attract you, a beautiful combination of serenity, spirituality, nature and activities, with its vivid and spellbinding spirit. Nestled right in the middle of the lap of nature, Theni is an absolute treasure chest for locations to discover. Travelers in Theni will be spoiled for options, from river. The Vaigai Dam, constructed across the Vaigai River, is one of the most prominent tourist attractions in Theni.
The climate of Theni, unlike its South Indian counterparts, The best time to visit Theni is, however, the winters and the beginning of summers. With cooler temperatures ranging from 18 Celsius to 22 Celsius, the weather during this period happens to be the highest. From December to February, Theni offers the best possible travel adventures. Although some travelers are drawn to the summer and monsoons, the number is lower due to the hot and humid atmosphere.
The important and prominent Hindu temples of this region are the Gowmariamman Temple at Veerapandi Village (Theni Taluk) and Saneeswara Bahavan Temple at Kuchanur Village (Uthamapalayam Taluk). Kannagi temple is on the interstate line, experiencing a single day festivity during Chitra Pournami day.
Kurangani is situated at an altitude of 400 ft.-6500 ft. in the Western Ghats. It is advertised as a modern tourism model: endogenous spice tourism.
Kolukkumalai is the largest tea estate in the world . In the precipitous ledge atop kurangani, the whole Kurangani Region is a storehouse of rich biodiversity. The nearest airport is Madurai, which is 106km from Kurangani. From Kurangani, Bodinayakanur is 16 km away. Hiking is accessible in the upper station. The state government has temporarily banned trekking in reserve forests and protected areas in the wake of the Kurangani Hills forest fire disaster that has claimed 16 lives so far.
After the young trekkers, mostly women, were found charred in a gorge on the twin grass hills while climbing down from Kolukkumalai, the ban was expected. Many experts claim that prior to March itself, the Forest Department should have been pro-active and prohibited trekking in Bodi Hills because the area is vulnerable to fires. Or, the movement of tourists, many of whom are likely to be new to the terrain, may have been safer and strictly regulated by eco-tourism.
In the case of a forest fire, a suitable method of raising alarms as well as transmitting such alarms down the chain of command will need to be worked out. In addition to the current ones, some foresters are proposing site-specific protocols.
On response methods and preventing tragedies, there is a wealth of data and well-worked norms available. The Kurangani fire is a wake-up call for the State Forest Department to put in place practises that will align eco-tourism with safety problems.
The 'Spatial and Temporal Analysis of Decadal Forest Fire Data (2006-2015)' published last March by the Forest Department reveals that forest fires begin during January itself, rise during February and peak during March in Tamil Nadu. During April, the number of incidents decreases and tapers off during the start of the monsoon. During March, nearly 48 percent of forest fire incidents were registered in Tamil Nadu and 72.4 percent in February and March.
When beat maps were overlaid with the observed fire incidents during this decade to determine the frequency of fire occurrence, it was found that at least one fire incident was detected in 638 beats-a beat is a designated region within the forest.
Of these, 21 beats were listed as highly sensitive (with 20 and more reported fire incidents). Bodi Kurangani South is a beat that is graded in February-March of any year as highly susceptible to fire. In Two more beats, Bodi Hills, Athiyoothu and Ulakkarauttiar, are in the "high" category where there were 15 to 19 fire incidents. In short, the alerts were there, in-house.
There is still debate a week later over who granted the trek access. The Forest Department states that the only "authorised" trek is from Kurangani to the Top Station and not to Kolukkumalai, which is a dangerous trek for ration supply or weekly requirements used by estate workers.
Of the two classes, only the entry pass was created by Erode-based Tour de India Holidays. Unfortunately, in the disaster, the organisers of the Chennai Trekking Club perished. Sure that the party did not go through the check-post about 1 km from the village of Kurangani, forest officials are still unclear about how they got on the trek.
People in Kurangani and Kolukkumalai say that treks also take place on this "unauthorised" road, if not regularly, now and then.DFO permission for trekking in reserve forests is mandatory as per the law. No one, but scientists and researchers, gets permission from the District Forest Officer from the time eco-tourism started," says a department field level staff."
