Dindigul is centered on the fort above the little rock hill and fort. The region of Dindigul was the border between the three influential kingdoms of South India, the Pandyas, Cheras, and Cholas. During the first century A.D, the Chola king, Karikal Cholan, invaded the Pandya kingdom. Dindigul and came under Chola's control. During the sixth century, the Pallavas took over much of the provinces of Southern India, and Dindigul was under Pallavas' rule until Cholas recovered the state in the 9th century. In 1602 A.D, Muthukrisna Nayakka became king of the kingdom. After the death of Viswanatha Nayak King in 1563, who built a strong fort on the hill in 1605 A.D. Muthuveerappa Nayak and Thirumalai Nayak accompanied Muthukrishna Nayak. Dindigul again came to prominence during the Nayak rule of Madurai under Thirumalai Nayak.
