About Meghamalai : In the Gazetteer maps of the British period, which date back to the 1920s, mention of these mountains can be found. Like several other forested areas of India, the region was being inspected by British officials for Cinchona plantations. The Highways, in the gazetteer's own words, were the least recognized part of Madurai's extended hilly area and were infested with wild elephants. The forest was deep and impenetrable, and everyone had to wade through chest-deep waters if they tried to join.
The best time to fly to Meghamalai: Winter is the best season to visit Meghamalai. The weather here from October to March is great for a trip. The cold climate wraps like an envelope around the hills and the valleys, thereby producing a beautiful atmosphere. As this is the monsoon season, try to stop from July to September.
How to Attain Meghamalai
Madurai will be the closest airport to Meghamalai, as well as the nearest railway station. It takes an hour and a half by car from the main town of Theni and about 3 hours by car from Madurai. As for the fauna, there are various species of birds, mammals, reptiles, and butterflies in Meghamalai. One can also spot over a hundred different kinds of birds, including the Great Indian Hornbills, with some patience. This forest is also the only home to the Latidens Salim Ali species of fruit bats, named after Salim Ali, a famous Indian ornithologist.
Located near Madurai, Theni is the most important agricultural property. Due to this charming climate and green environment, this city has become popular. Coffee, cardamom plantations, grape vineyards, and other crops fill much of Theni's part. For those who need a break from the hustle and bustle, Theni is a superb getaway. The district of Theni was declared as a separate district in 1997. Until then it was part of the district of Madurai and belonged to the municipality of Madurai. The most important villages in Theni are Bodi and Ammapatti. The district of Theni extends over an area of 2,889 sq km. Tamil is the official language and citizens of all faiths live in peace here. Theni district was sparsely populated in the early 90s, then the cambium after the building of Mullai Periyar dam, Some water was obtained by the valley and so the regions surrounding it flourished. The Theni district is divided into two natural divisions, one with dense vegetation in the hilly area and the other with perennial streams in the green fields. 40.3 percent of Theni is agricultural land and farmers make up more than 50 percent of the people living here. The sweetest of all grapes is considered to be the Paneer trachea(purple grapes) that is grown here.
