Mattupetty, the hill station at an altitude of 1,700 m, lies nestled within the Munnar hills and very close to the Anamudi peak. Mattupetty is located in Munnar, 13 km away. You will appreciate the greenish valleys here and feel the fabulous world around them. Mattupetty's primary draw is the dam and lake here.
Mattupetty's Dam is a concrete gravity dam for storage. In the late 1940s, the dam was designed for the purpose of water conservation and power generation under the Pallivasal Hydro-electric scheme. Now, because of its constant water availability, the dam is a critical source of power generation in Munnar and also a sanctuary for many wild animals and birds.
The most attractive aspect of the Mattupetty dam is the still water that matches the tea garden around it. You can participate in water sports activities such as speed boating organised by the Idukki (Munnar) District Tourism Promotion Council and enjoy the beautiful natural surroundings of this beautiful dam. There are also options for adventure lovers here, such as hiking in the Shola forest..
A lovely lake lies in the middle of the hills, surrounded by tea gardens, Shola forest and hilly woodland, just a few miles from Mattupetty Dam. The lake's serene environment will carry you to a world of calm. Either you can go boating in the lake or you can relax on the shore enjoying the tranquilly here. You have countless choices. A speed boat, pedal boat, motor boat or row boat may be used by visitors.
Mattupetty, the name that came from the popular Indo Swiss farm project, or Livestock project, is also known as 'cattle village.' As part of a bilateral agreement between India and the Swiss government, the project was launched in 1963. Hundreds of varieties of high-yielding cattle can be seen on this field. A rare experience that any visitor will ever have in his life is the sight of cattle grazing peacefully on the hills of a large farm.
The farm is about three kilometres from the Mattupetty Dam and is dedicated to the Government of Switzerland's cattle production and research centre. The Kerala Livestock Production and Milk Marketing Board are currently handling the project.
Various viewpoints are separated throughout this area, from where you can have a look at the beautiful valleys, hills and rivers. It has made it a popular trekking and camping site with its pleasant hills, pristine lakes, and rugged terrain.
Some of the local attractions here draw visitors from all over the world, such as the Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary and the mysterious Nilgiri Tahr. Nestled between the beautiful hills of Munnar, where you can come for a romantic escapade, is a pristine waterfall called Atukkad Waterfall. Photopoint is another amazing destination packed with sparkling streams and peaceful forests in Munnar and is an excellent place to take photographs.
