History about Madurai 

Madurai, formerly (until 1949) Madura, South-Central Tamil Nadu State Capital, South India. It is situated about 30 miles (48 km) southeast of Dindigul on the Vaigai River. Madurai is the state's third most populous, and possibly the oldest, city.

The ancient city of Madurai, more than 2,500 years old, was founded in the 6th century B.C. by the King of Pandya, Kulashekarar. The reign of the Nayaks, however, marks Madurai's golden age when literature, architecture and learning flourished expansively.

Viswantha Nayak was succeeded by his son Krishnappa Nayak, who extended the Madurai Kingdom under the Nayaks along with his father's able minister, Ariyanatha, and brought most of the ancient Pandyan territory under its control.

The legend says that Madurai was originally a forest known as Kadambavanam. One day a farmer named Dhananjaya, passing through the forest, saw Indra (King of the Gods) worshipping a swayambhu (self-created Lingam) under a kadamba tree.
