In the form of a virgin child, Goddess Parasakthi came to Kumari and began her penance. Lord Shiva, meanwhile, fell in love with her and plans for the marriage were made on a specific day at midnight. Now Narada, the divine sage, realised that their marriage would ruin the chances of annihilating Banusura, since only a virgin could kill him.
Sage Narada took the shape of a cock and crowed falsely heralding the break of dawn when Lord Shiva was on his way to Kanniyakumari from Suchindrum at Valukkamparai 5 kms south of Suchindram. Lord Siva returned unhappy, believing that the auspicious time for the marriage was past. After that the Goddess still chose to remain a virgin. History of Sri Subrahmanya Swami Devasthanam, Thiruchendur.
Nakkirar is referred to as more than ordinary sanctity for his worship in devotional literature and in the Tiru-murugarruppadai, the earliest account of his worship, six chosen spots in the Tamil country, and thus favoured by him. Among them, Tiruchendur occupies the second position in his order.
This temple is situated on the seashore uncommonly enough, although the majority of His temples are invariably located on high elevations as on hilltops. The reasoning is that Murugan is given the Kuriñji or hill country in the physio-graphical five-fold separation of the land by the Tamil grammarians. His shrines are often located in the middle of mountains and trees, since he is considered dear to these areas.
The difference here may be due to the divine task of Muruga to free the Devas and the defeat of Surapatuma and his mighty hosts in their nearby mid-ocean fortress, "Vîra-mahendram," As such, the puranas narrate that their deliverance was achieved by the Devas and his grace by the Asuras. In Skanda Puranam, tradition and ?iva-rahasya Khanda relate that Muruga camped for Him at this place before and after the defeat of the asuras and adored ?iva at the Mayan shrine. The foundations of the Kanda-Madana-Parvata, the red sandstone rock of this coast, were dignified. A lofty gopuram grew up beside it too. Some fifty feet high, a portion of the cliff was bored to form the sacred sanctum of Subrahmanyam.
