Located in Tamil Nadu state, Kodaikanal is one of India's most popular honeymoon destinations. Kodaikanal has a beautiful environment, mist-covered manicured cliffs and waterfall that come together to create the ideal setting for a perfect getaway in a Lakeside resort town of Tamil Nadu. Kodaikanal means the gift of the jungle.
Any tourist will be mesmerized throughout the year by the cool and misty weather, the scenic beauty of the rolling hills and the wooded forest of Kodaikanal and its surroundings. Walk through the wooded woods, row through the lake, bathe in one of the splashing waterfalls, go horseback riding and cycling around the lake, or just enjoy the views.
This activity is particularly recommended for early birds, since the Coaker's is open from 7 AM to 7 PM. It is a beautiful walking plaza about 1 kilometre in length that includes an uphill walk on a beautifully developed park surrounded by views that are often described as awe-inspiring and breathtaking. Located in close proximity to the Kodaikanal Lake, a walk along the Coaker's Walk path is the perfect activity to combine with boating in the lake. There is a telescope house at the end of the pathway that visitors can use to enjoy clearer views of the surrounding hills , valleys, and lakes.
Dolphin's Nose: The short 3 kilometre hike is extremely easy and the top, shaped like a dolphin's nose, as the name implies, provides spectacular views of the hill station. On days when the town is blanketed by a mysterious fog, the hike feels extra sweet. Mysteriously foggy days are the best to take the hike if you are the kind of traveller who values soulful introspection over clicking images. Dolphin's Nose won't disappoint, even though you fall into the above group.
The viewpoint of the Pillar Rocks is one of the most visited locations by tourists to Kodaikanal. Pillar Rocks are, as the name implies, pillar-like rock formations that stand over a valley full of exotic flora and fauna. A 7 kilo metre hike that is well worth the effort is included in reaching the top of pillar rocks. The top is also a popular campsite as it provides stunning views of the sun setting at night and equally spectacular views of the night sky dotted with billions of stars.
The cave created by the Pillar Rocks is the Guna cave. For those visiting the Pillar Rocks, and for good reason, the dark and mysterious cave system is always part of the itinerary. Although the cave interiors are no longer open to visitors, they are still drawn by the hundreds by the surrounding natural beauty and the element of mystery.
Kodaikanal is home to eight distinctive waterfalls that deliver a heady mix of breathtaking views and picturesque scenery that make you forget all your woes. In the company of the Bear Shola Falls, travellers can choose to visit and spend a full day or can go "waterfall hopping" and try to cover as many falls as possible. Liril Falls, Silver Cascade Waterfall, Pambar Falls, Fairy Falls, and Thalaiyar Falls are additional notable waterfalls in Kodaikanal.
A relaxing picnic in Bryant Park is one of the most enjoyable things to do for kids in Kodaikanal. Filled with colourful, blooming flowers, this well-maintained botanical garden is a perfect place for family picnics and walks.
The Pine Forest in Kodaikanal, lying on the way to Guna Caves, is a dreamy and relaxing terrain where you can do everything from just taking a walk to camping to spotting nilgai and deer. It is certain that a stroll through the picturesque Pine Forest would make you feel like you are walking in a fairytale. The variety of migratory and resident birds you'll be able to spot here is another thing that draws people here.
The view of the Green Valley gives the tourists who visit there to experience the beauty of lush green hills with magnificent views of the deep hills , valleys and plains. A visit to the Vaigai Dam will make life an unforgettable experience. This valley is also regarded as the point of suicide because of the thick deep forest.
The cave's specialty lies in its metamorphic rocks, also known as charconite and granulite. Until the mid-1980s, more than 30 families used to live on the hilltop, and a small temple was also built there.
Bear Shola Falls: Bear Shola Falls is a popular tourist spot in the area, located just 2 kilometres from Kodaikanal Lake. During the monsoons, as the water flows down from the hilltop making its way through the greenery of the area, this cascade is a seasonal attraction that comes to life in its fullest.
An curious legend behind this place 's unusual name is that it was a favourite haunt of a bear who used to drink water regularly from this water body, thus giving it the name Bear Shola Falls. For those who want to escape from concrete forest parks, this destination's quiet and calm atmosphere is a true sanctuary. With many common and uncommon species of animals and plants, a visit to this area will bring one up close and personal.
Thalaiyar Falls: Thalaiyar Falls, also known as Rat Tail Falls, is situated in the lush green slopes of the Dindigul District of the Palani Hill Ranges, in Kodaikanal. It is the highest waterfall in Tamil Nadu, the sixth highest waterfall in India and the 267th highest waterfall in the world, with a height of 297 m. In the park at Dum Dum Rock, there is a view tower where you can get a beautiful view of the falls and the Manjalar Dam. The water from the river coming to the falls is from the village of Perumal Malai, 9 km downstream and is said to be clear. On the contrary, it may be tainted, and tourists to the area are therefore advised to avoid consuming it.
The Temple of Kurunji is primarily dedicated to Lord Murugu and is dexterously situated 3 km from the lake. The temple is also associated with the Kurunji Flower, which blooms once in 12 years, carpeting the entire area with purple flowers, offering spectacular views of small villages, Palani Hills and Northern plains, and carrot plantation on the terraced slopes.
Kodaikanal Solar Observatory: The Kodaikanal Solar Observatory, situated at the southern tip of the beautiful Palani Hills, was founded in 1899 and is owned and operated by the Indian Institute of Astrophysics. Its longitudinal position makes it a special location for solar behaviour analysis. The most comprehensive collection of solar records, dating back to the 19th century, is also housed in the scientific home. Its specific geography makes the spot particularly ideal (especially relative to the sun) for accurate cosmic observations.
