In the San Thome area of what is now present-day Chennai, Armenian and Portuguese merchants lived before the British arrived in 1639. Madras was the abbreviated name of Madraspatnam, a fishing village where the British East India Company built a fort and factory (trading post) in 1639-40. The weaving of cotton fabrics was a local industry at that time, and the English invited the weavers and indigenous merchants to settle close to the fort.
By 1652, the Fort St. George factory was recognised as a presidency (an administrative unit governed by a president), and the company expanded its control between 1668 and 1749. By 1801, the English had become masters of southern India, and Madras had become their administrative and commercial capital, by which time the last of the local rulers had been shorn of their powers. The Tamil Nadu government officially changed the city's name to Chennai in 1996.
From its 17th-century heart, shaped by Fort St. George and the Indian quarters, Madras developed without a plan. The industrial areas are to the north and northwest; the main residential areas are to the west and south, where a number of new high-rise apartment buildings have been constructed, and the old villages are in the middle. The seven largest tem-temp buildings in the city are the most distinctive.
