Tucked inside Tamil Nadu's Western Ghats, Megamalai in Theni district is the kind of secret paradise you read about in books, complete with thrilling trekking trails, stunning scenes and an excellent opportunity to take a break in the lap of nature from your daily life.
The Megamalai Hills were, until recently, confined to private tea and coffee plantation estates. But now, the vast region of quiet wilderness is steadily opening up to visitors, one beautiful place at a time. It remains, however, one of the destinations near Theni that is untouched and untarnished. With lush forests and rich tea plantations, the landscape here is drawn, waiting to be explored. Sudden waterfalls crack the green monochrome on the way, and one of the many native species of the Meghamalai Hills still has the latent thrill of coming across it.
The flora and fauna are Meghamalai 's true jewels. As you drive into Meghamalai, with its elegance and beauty and its majestic appearance, you can almost sense the wilderness of the place enveloping you. The forest and its inhabitants here in Meghamalai have something really irresistible about them.
Some of the other plantations here, apart from extensive tea and coffee estates, are pepper, cardamom and cinnamon. As for the fauna, there are various species of birds, mammals , reptiles and butterflies in Meghamalai. It is very popular here to have elephants, leopards, Nilgiri tahr, Indian gaur, barking deer, sambar, spotted deer, langur, macaques, and sloth bears. One can also spot over a hundred different kinds of birds, including the Great Indian Hornbills, with some patience.
Winter is the best season to visit Meghamalai. The weather here from October to March is great for a trip. The cold climate wraps like an envelope around the hills and the valleys, thereby producing a beautiful atmosphere.
The Suruli River falls down from the Meghamalai Range in two stages to form the waterfalls of the same name. Suruli Falls cascade down in a roaring whiteness from a height of 150 ft to collect into a pool and then plunge for another 40 ft after a short distance. Hundreds of eager visitors take a dip everyday at the foot of the waterfall. Many of them are devotees; some of them are searching for their long-suffering disease to be healed, while the others are there only to enjoy the falls.
In the ancient Tamil epic, Silappathikaram, written by the poet Ilango Adigal, the beauty of these falls is described. Near Suruli Falls are five caves reflecting Indian rock-cut architecture from the 11th century. The water of the Suruli River is considered medicinal and curative.
The hills of Suruli are a part of Pothigai Malai. A strongly divine and spiritual base is the Pothigai hills. There is a tale that the place was unbalanced when Shiva and Parvati entered into divine marriage at Mount Kailash in the north because of the multitude of holy beings witnessing the wedding. Agastya Maharishi was requested by Lord Shiva to proceed to southern India to balance the universe.
Agastya Maharishi then continued to the hills of Pothigai and the world was balanced. On a Shivalingam that was at Tiru Kalyana Teertham in Pothigai hills, Agastya Maharishi was able to imagine the marriage of Lord Shiva and Parvati. Several saints and sages from the Himalayas visit these hills, particularly on a full moon day. The striking resemblance between the profiles of Mt. Kailash and Agasthyamalai confirms these holy peaks' mythological links.
Near the falls is Suruli Velappar Temple, in honour of Kartikeya. This temple has an OM Pranava form. OM is the Universal Root Mantra. Before the Earth and all planets were made, this Mantra was generated. When you are in the meditation frequency, you can hear the OM Mantra in this cave. Omgara Guru Sidhar Gunaneethy, who is the founder of Rishi's Meditation, made this remark.
The Kailasanathar Cave Temple lies 800 m (2,600 ft) above the fall. Many Sidhars meditate in a natural spring at Kailasanathar cave with waters that have medicinal powers. Now, many of the souls of Meykanda Devar are there. Kailasanathar cave is linked with the Kovil Cave of Sathura Giri Mahalingam. The Murugan statue of the Palani temple was constructed with Navapasana (a special medicine made from nine poisons) by Bogar. Before he came to the Kailasnathar temple, the bogar installed the statue. Here he took several herbals and created the Navapasana statue of Murugan.
