One of the largest and most prominent monasteries in Sikkim, perched atop a hill 23 km from Gangtok, is the Rumtek Monastery. Originally called the Dharma Chakra Core, it belongs to the Buddhist Kargyu sect, which originated in the 12th century in Tibet. In addition to being a focal point for spiritual solace, verdant green mountains surround the monastery and thus serve as a visual treat. If you ascend to the Rumtek Monastery on top, you can have a stunning view of the entire town of Gangtok, located just opposite the hill. Besides this, one of the best in the world is the architecture of the striking monastery.
Gangtok to Darjeeling
One of the most beautiful hill stations in the eastern part of India is Darjeeling. Darjeeling stands at an altitude of 2,050 metres above sea level, spread over a steep mountain range, nestled among acres of lush green tea plantations, thus boasting cool climes throughout the year. For a romantic honeymoon, this scenic hill station is the ideal getaway and is just about 700 kilometres away from Kolkata.
The town is known as the 'Queen of the Himalayas' for one reason. A sight as mesmerising as no other is the lush green slopes lined with women plucking tea leaves. In Darjeeling, there are over 86 tea estates responsible for producing the world famous 'Darjeeling Tea'. At the tea farm, have a cup of locally brewed chai, or get down in the middle of the plantations to pluck yourself a few tea leaves, you are free to take your pick!
The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway is a 2-foot narrow gauge train that runs in West Bengal, India, between New Jalpaiguri and Darjeeling, also referred to as the DHR, and lovingly called the 'Darjeeling Toy Train'. Between 1879 and 1881, the construction of this 88-kilometre long railway line took place, and a trip on this train route has since become a coveted experience.
With fun mountain views, a ride on the Darjeeling Toy Train has spectacular sights and passes through villages and local shops on the way, with children happily waving at them. The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway provides major transport links between different parts of the hills and lower plains of Darjeeling and is a piece of pure inventiveness and vision of engineering.
Located at an altitude of 2590 metres and 13 kilometres from Darjeeling, Tiger Hill is best known for its spectacular sunrise views from where you can see the peaks of Kanchenjunga lit up before the sun is seen at lower altitudes. The spectacular view of snow-capped mountains sitting among cotton clouds draws visitors from all over the world to Tiger Hill.
Interestingly, this is also the summit of Ghoom, the tallest railway station on the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway. In winters, due to delayed sunrise time, the starting time from Darjeeling is 3.30 AM to hit tiger hill by 4.15 AM. The starting time is 4.15 AM. A convoy of jeeps and cars blocks the roads during the busy season.
The Batasia Loop is perhaps one of the most picturesque train routes in all of Darjeeling, a lush green toy train path that is intended to reduce the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway's elevation. This magnificent attraction's unique nature allows the track to loop around itself through a hilltop tunnel. The unparalleled natural beauty, which is a beautiful sight to see, is one of the most enchanting features of the Batasia Loop.
Located on Hill Cart Road (NH 55), in all its green glory, you will enjoy a panoramic view of Darjeeling. The inspiration behind the development of the magnificent path of the Batasia Loop was rooted in easy navigation around the terrain of Darjeeling, located in Ghoom, about 5 kilometres from Darjeeling. It rises from the centre of emerald carpets of mountain vegetation and on one side also overlooks the snowy peaks of Kanchenjungha.
Rock Garden, located 10 km away from Darjeeling, is an exquisite picnic spot with natural fall terraces known as Chunnu Summer Fall.
