The Courtallam Falls are a natural collection of small waterfalls that eventually end up as a single, gigantic cascade at the base. They are said to descend from several major mountain rivers, among many others, such as the Chittar, Pachaiyar, and Maninuthar Rivers. In local folklore, it is a common belief that Courtallam's waters have medicinal properties that could cure a disability.
The 3 main falls, i.e. The only ones reachable by road are the Main Falls, Old Courtallam Falls, and Five Falls. For safety reasons, the remainder either requires a trek into the mountains or is restricted to the public. The following is a brief description of the different falls:
Peraruvi Falls: This is the most important falls, where the flow of water is slowed down higher up in the mountains by the 19-meter-large Pongumakadal crater. The water force is reduced to a safe level, allowing individuals to take a bath under it safely. The large pool is open to tourists for bathing. This was torn down again later to allow the water to flow without restriction.
Pazhaya Courtalla Aruvi: These were the original falls that would flow into the valley uninhibited from within the mountains. Some rocks were subsequently broken and restructured to gather the water into a large pool open to both
Shenbagadevi Falls: This fall is named after the Shenbaga trees it flows through. Ultimately, the Shenbagadevi Falls flows into the Chitraruvi falls. It is believed that Shenbagadevi is a powerful Goddess, which is why there is also a temple built near the falls to her name.
Thenaruvi Falls: At a distance of 3 km from the Shenbagadevi Falls, the Thenaruvi Falls are located. It is 40 meters high and flows between two large stones. As for the bounties of nature, there are large honeycombs and In the vicinity, which makes it harmful for tourists to visit the surrounding area.
Puli Aruvi (Tiger Falls): With a moderate amount of water that gathers in a lake at the bottom, this is a decent fall. The water from this lake is then distributed for irrigation purposes, while also serving as a water source in the neighborhood for wildlife. Tigers are believed to come here for drinking water as well, and so Tiger Falls was invented.
Monsoons are the perfect time for a waterfall to visit. From June to September, Courtallam Falls are at its peak beauty. In addition, there is a phenomenon called the Northeast Monsoon in the state of Tamil Nadu, with heavy rains from October to December as well. However, while at this moment the waterfall may be beautiful to watch from a distance, it is not accessible and may even be dangerous as the huge volume of water often causes floods in the area. Enthusiasts of photography may also find it worth their while to visit this majestic waterfall. And if you're a true nature buff, there should be enough mountains and glorious greenery to satisfy your soul as well.
