Hyderabad is home to stately mosques and loud bazaars lined parallel to swanky modern office buildings and malls, the capital and the largest city of Telanaga, and it is these very contrasts-these glimpses into the rich history of the city with inherent promises of an even better future-that make Hyderabad a city worth visiting.
Hyderabad, the town of pearls and biryani, is home to one of the most iconic landmarks-the Charminar. The grand building is constructed entirely of limestone and granite, with four minarets on four sides, each facing a different street, translating to 'four minarets'. The Charminar is one of the best places to shop for authentic pearls and enjoy the delicious biryanis, skewer kebabs and haleem (the smorgasbord of food that Hyderabad is renowned for), standing in a maze of lanes full of stores, markets, stalls and shoppers.
Places to visit in Hyderabad
Charminar is the most prominent landmark located right in the heart of Hyderabad, an identification feature of the region. Quli Qutub Shah erected the monument to signify the founding of Hyderabad. It was so called as it consists of four minarets, as is evident from the structure. Although it lies right in the middle of the city with traffic and crowds all around it, Charminar undoubtedly manages to keep his gaze.
Since the building of the monument in 1591, Charminar has stood high as a reminder of the glory days of the past century, associated with the culture of Hyderabad. It is a massive structure with four minarets that are believed by many to represent Islam's first four 'khalifas' (prophets). There are four gateways known as Char Kaman to the north of the monument, which have been built in the cardinal directions. The structure was designed to serve as a Mosque or a Madrasa.
Charminar has been added to the 'tentative list' of UNESCO World Heritage Sites in its present form, along with Qutub Shahi Tombs and Golconda Fort.

Located in the western part of the beautiful town of Hyderabad, about 9 km from Hussain Sagar Lake, Golconda Fort is one of the best-preserved monuments in the city. In 1600s, the construction of this fort was completed and it is known to be the area where the mighty Koh-I-Noor diamond was once stored. It is said that the echoes of it can be heard right up to the top if you clap your hands at the bottom of the fort!
Golconda Fort comes to life in the evening with a light and sound display featuring snippets from its royal history. In their own right, the grandeur, the rise, and the collapse of the fort are all impressive.
Hussain Sagar Lake, known as the largest artificial lake in Asia, is one of the most popular tourist attractions located in Hyderabad. The lake itself was commissioned by Ibrahim Quli Qutub Shah in 1563 and is known for its Lord Buddha monolith that stands right in the middle of it. This monolith structure, incidentally, is the world's tallest of its kind! Also called Tank Bund, Hussain Sagar Lake lies on a tributary of the River Musi.
The attraction is also 3 km long, connecting the twin towns of Hyderabad and Secunderabad with the dam wall. While Hussain Sagar Lake is popular for activities such as fish culture, water sports and boat rides, a monolithic Buddha statue located right in the heart of the lake is the main attraction of the lake.
In 1992, the Buddha statue was installed and was inaugurated by His Holiness the Dalai Lama himself. Standing at the Tank Bund, as the lights shine on the sea, you can see the entire lake shimmering around you.
History of the Musi River, Salar Jung Museum is located at Darushifa and is one of the crowning jewels of Hyderabad. It is one of the country's three national museums and also one of the largest, with 10 acres and 2 floors. The collection within the museum is owned by Mir Yousuf Ali Khan, also known as Salar Jung III.
