In the bygone colonial period, Kannur still has an aura. The deep footprints of the Sultanate of the Netherlands, the Portuguese, the British and the Mysore are still immersed in the town and can be witnessed all over. While in Kannur, take an evening walk near the lighthouse beach or explore Portuguese history at St. Angelo's Fort.
Beach Payyambalam : Sparkling pearls of golden sand and foamy white waves from the Arabian Sea adorn the impeccably unspoiled Payyabalam beach. Payyabalam Beach, the highlight of Kannur and one of the many beautiful beaches in Kerala, has an extremely peaceful and welcoming aura. Relax by relaxing at this remarkable seashore after a long week and find yourself hyped by its exquisite elegance and infectious calm.
The beach approach is via a small crossover bridge constructed over a narrow canal. To the right of the bridge are the monuments of the important political figures of Kannur who have passed away over the last few decades. The shores are embellished by palm trees and casuarinas like an alluring garland in different shades of green. Not just for relaxing and revitalizing yourself, this pristine golden beach is perfect for boating, diving, and exciting adventure sports!
Best Places to visit in Kannur
Muzzhapilangad Push Drive : one of the best drive-in beaches that the whole Asian continent has to offer! Being the only drive-in beach in Kerala, it attracts the attention of many visitors all year round. The entire point of drive-in beaches is that you can drive right down the beach's sandy shores. It is not too often that you get to travel along a 4 km long shoreline that provides a traffic-free open road and a breathtaking view. Treat and go out for some paragliding, parasailing, powerboating, and many other water sports with the adrenaline junkie in you. The Drive-In Beach Muzzhapilangad is the ideal weekend getaway to blow off some steam and spend quality time with your loved ones.
Fort of St Angelos: It is undoubtedly one of Kannur's most famous and frequently visited attractions, and for more than one reason. With unadulterated beauty and sheer strength, the polished and prehistoric structure of this fortress oozes. St Angelos Fort enjoys a panoramic and unobstructed view of the diorama formed by the merging of the magnetic waves and the azure waters, standing ashore in the Arabian sea. It also overlooks a natural harbor, the mesmerizing Mozilla Bay.
Lighthouse Kannur : The deal is pretty high. This lighthouse, standing tall at an altitude of 75 feet, was first installed in the early months of 1903. This concrete cylindrical tower has been able to endure the Arabian Sea attacks and has been completely functional for over a century. As the evening breaks in to warn the seamen of the land, the Kannur Lighthouse has a balcony with a light that is lit. Treat the history buff in you to be fascinated by its fascinating history and visit this place,
As the name suggests, Kannur is a tiny but extremely attractive beach on the Arabian Seashore. It is a very popular picnic spot for the locals of Kannur and draws the attention of many visitors with its panoramic view of the azure Arabian Sea. Do not be mistaken by its name or scale. Currently, Baby Beach is an extension of Payamballam Beach. It is one of the few rocky beaches where people sit on giant rocks and look at the hypnotic allure of the giant rocks. People flock here during the sunset and the sunrise to see the tantalizing beauty of the sky. The view of the sunrise from Baby Beach is truly a calming one, seeing the orange ball of fire rising from the horizon and bringing the sky to blush in deep hues of magenta. Although you can't really take a dip from Baby Beach in the waters, the panoramic view of the palm-fringed beach and the endless Arabian Sea is more than enough to keep you in control.
Kannur's Scope : Through all the major modes of transport, i.e. roadways, railways and airways, Kannur is well-linked with all the other cities. Calicut International Airport, Kozhikode, is the nearest airport to Kannur and is located about 85 km from the town.
The best time for Kannur to visit
The best time to visit Kannur, a coastal city with a tropical climate, is from October to February. The winters in Kannur are mostly favored by tourists as it is the most convenient and relaxing time of the year with a nice climate. The temperature varies from around 20 to 25 degrees Celsius. Monsoons are also suitable for a tour, just make sure you are fitted with mosquito repellents and umbrellas.
Winter's Kannur : Winter is the perfect time to visit Kannur's secluded, sandy beaches. The weather is fine, with little or no rainfall, not too hot and not too cold. Temperatures are within a comfortable range of 14 to 25 degrees C. Winter is when big festivals such as Adoor Gajamela and Pongal in Kannur and other parts of Kerala are also beautifully celebrated. The days are full of sunshine for sightseeing and other events, such as visiting the Fort of St. Angelo,
Kannur from the Monsoon : In the monsoon, beach towns are the least visited, but Kannur is an exception. Rainfall in Kerala has a pattern, with a few hours of downpour followed by a bright and inviting sun and rain-soaked greenery, unlike other regions where rainfall is consistent without a sign of sunshine. Temperatures range from 23 to 29 degrees C. Monsoon is for the lovers of nature who wouldn't mind rain interrupting their excursions.
In summer, Kannur : Kannur is an exotic place to travel to but the perfect time is not summer. As February ends, temperatures start rising and go up to 36 degrees C in May. Although you can spend your day cooling off at the beach, the hot and humid weather will make you want to spend your days indoors with some breezy air blasting from the air conditioner. The evening is a nice time to go out and explore the otherwise quiet town for a stroll. To hit the waters, carry your beachwear.
