The Tamil Literature of the Sangam Age is highly celebrated and at least eleven poets describe it in their poems. At Periakoviloor, near the famous water falls called Akasa Gangai, the famous Shiva Temple known as the Arappalleeswarar Temple dating back to the twelfth century is situated. Valval Ori, about 200 A.D., who is praised as one of the seven great philanthropists of ancient Tamil Nadu, governed the province. Various poets sing of his bravery and marksmanship and it is also a popular part of folklore. It is said that Ori killed a lion, a bear, a wolf, and a boar with just one arrow.
