The area was situated along an ancient Roman trade route that stretched to Arikamedu from Muziris. In the 10th century, the mediaeval Cholas invaded Kongu Nadu, the area was crossed by a Chola road named Rajakesari Peruvazhi. By the 15th century, much of Tamil Nadu was under the control of the Vijayanagara empire. In the 1550s, the region was taken over by the Madurai Nayaks, who were the military governors of the Vijaynagara Empire.

STATUE OF ADIYOGI SHIVA: Adiyogi Shiva Statue, surrounded by verdant green farms at the foot of the Velliangiri Mountains in the Western Ghats, is the largest bust statue in the world dedicated to the famous Hindu deity Shiva, made out of 500 tonnes of steel. The sculpture stands tall at a height of 112 feet at the Isha Yoga Complex in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu.
The statue was recognised by the Guinness World Book of Records as the "largest bust sculpture" which is 34.3 metres high, except the plinth, 45 metres long and 7.62 metres tall. The statue was inaugurated on the 24th of February 2017 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the founder of IS Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev. The sculpture was created with the intention of encouraging and supporting yoga, and the statue is called "Adiyoga," meaning "the first yogi," as the originator of yoga is believed to be Lord Shiva.
