The District, with its headquarters in Nagappattinam City, came into existence in 1991. The long stretch of beach stretches 188 kilometers along the Bay of Bengal. Nagappattinam is proud to have one of the most prosperous ports in India. It has the Amman Temple of Shri Kayahorana Swami Neelayathatchi, the Sowriraja Perumal Temple, and the Mariamman Temple of Nellukkadai. Some of the places worth visiting in this city are the Mini Museum, the towering lighthouse, and the long, beautiful beach.

Poombuhar Region : Poombuhar is in the Nagapattinam District's Sirkali Taluk. It is referred to as Kaveripoompattinam. Tourists have to take the Mayiladuthurai junction to proceed by road to Poombuhar. Visitors from Chennai have to get to Sirkali by rail. Poombuhar is connected by road to Mayiladuthurai as well as to Sirkali. The distance from Poombuhar is 24 km to Mayiladuthurai and 21 km to Sirkali. Private carriers can take the route from Chennai to Poombuhar via Dindivanam, Pandicherry, Cuddallo.

Tagore Nagore: The Dargha in Nagore, near Nagapattinam, the headquarters of the district, is a sacred spot. This holy center visits not only the followers of Islam but also of all religions during the year to offer their prayers and get the saint's blessings. Almost five hundred years ago, a son, named Abdul Kadhar, was born into a devout Muslim family in a village in the central provinces. With a thirst for Allah's grace, he wandered far and wide with his disciples. After visiting various places such as Keelakkarai and preaching the doctrine of love, devotion to service to the almighty, he came to Tamilnadu and settled in Nagore in a piece of land granted by a devotee of this holy preacher. His words and acts were prophetic and sacred. He said,' Islam preaches God's fatherhood and man's brotherhood.' He sent his followers to work among the people and to spread the prophet Muhammad's word.

Nagapattinam Tourist attractions

Velankanni : Velankanni is one of India's most visited centers for pilgrims. It is a town on the banks of the Bay of Bengal. This famous temple, Our Lady of Health Basilica, attracts visitors from all over the world. Not only Christians, but people of other religions also come to this Church to pray at Our Lady of Health's shrine. Knowing the importance of this city, the Pope proclaimed Velankanni a holy city in Vatican City. There is an expanded Basilica in this Roman Catholic Building, which has two floors where one can find the statue of Jesus Christ. A distinctive aspect of the Church is the Gothic style of architecture. A majestic structure with inspiring architecture is the church itself. Although the buildings have been painted, the white roof of the church is made of tiles that are startling red in contrast to the color of the church.

Padi Tharangam : It's 35kms north of Nagapattinam on the Bay of Bengal's eastern coastline. The attractions in Tranguebar are Danish architecture. There are bus services available from Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai, Poompuhar, Sirkali, and Chidambaram to this place. It was designed in 1620 to show Danish architecture. The fort is now under the jurisdiction of the Archaeological Department of Tamil Nadu, which houses an archaeological museum. This museum is open every day until Friday.

Kodiakkarai :Kodiakkarai, situated at the edge of the Palk Strait, is also called Point Calimere. This Wild Life Sanctuary, spread over an area of over 312.17 hectares, has mammals such as blue buck, spotted deer, wild boar, semi-wild ponies, macaque caps, water birds such as flamingos, ibises, herons, and spoonbills. Some of these reptiles are sea turtles, star tortoises, vipers, swamp crocodiles, etc. Occasionally, fish, dolphins, dugongs, sea lions, and sea cows are found here.

Thirukkadaiyur : Thirukkadaiyur is on the Chidambaram- Nagappattinam bus road. It was in this temple that Lord Shiva annihilated Yama, the God of death and destruction, to save Markandey's life and to give him immortality. It is one of Sakthi's most important seats. The temple of Shri Abirami Amman Temple is situated within the precincts of the temple of Arulmigu Amerthakadeswarar. The great Saint Abirami Bhattar wrote Abirami Anthathi's divine songs.

Places to visit in Nagapattinam

Sirkazhi : Sirkali is situated between Mayiladuthurai and Chidambaram on the main route. There are many wonderful architectural and sculptural features at Shri Arulmigu Sattanatha Swami temple. In the holy songs of Thevaram, this temple has been glorified. Saiva Saint Thirugnana Sambandar, one of the four great divine poets, was bestowed with divine grace by Lord Shiva and Parvathy here. The Thirumulaippal festival is celebrated in a grand way every year in the Tamil month of Chithirai.

Mayiladuthurairaius : Here is located ArulmiguMayuranathar Temple. Anna Parasakthi danced in the shape of a peacock, according to Hindu mythology, and hence the location is called Mayiladuthurai. After worshipping Mayuranathar, devotees can travel by bus from here to all the locations of Navagrahas and other important temples. The Holy Bath Festival on the River Cauvery, known as Kadai Muzhukku, is celebrated in the month of Ippasi.

Ananthamangalam : Ananthamangalam is situated 5Km from Thirukkadaiyur on the east coast between Nagappattinam and Chidambaram. People visit the temple of Lord Anjaneyar for His blessings from all over Tamil Nadu. With its three eyes and ten hands, the divine statue of Anjaneya here is remarkable. Unique Anjaneya worship is held on Saturdays and Amavasya Days.

Poompuhar Beach : Poompuhar Beach is an ancient and natural beach along the Bay of Bengal in the quaint little town of Poompuhar, Tamil Nadu. The beach begins at the Kaveri river and stretches in the direction of Neithavasal, about 3 km to the north. Poompuhar is an ideal coastal town for those who enjoy walking through history and memoirs. It is your entrance to the past. You can schedule a weekend trip to the city and live in unique cottages shaped like a shell. When the celebrations are over, the beach is paved with black sand that stretches over 3 km and turns into a nice picnic spot. With your mates, you can prepare a bassinet and spend some quality time. You'd never want to swim here though, considering the fact that the water is rough.
