Probably the most popular draw in Meghalaya, deep in the thick tropical forest and veiled for much of the year in cloud and fog, are some incredible man-made natural wonders known as living root bridges. They have been taught by imaginative members of the Khasi tribe to rise from the roots of ancient rubber trees, native to the northeast region. You can see the bridges at two locations: between Cherrapunji and Mawlynnong.
Mawlynnong: In addition to having a living root bridge nearby that is conveniently available, a travel magazine called the "Cleanest Village in Asia" scenic Mawlynnong village. The village is an excellent instance of community-based ecotourism, often called "God's Own Garden". On top of the tallest tree in the forest, almost 80 feet up, the locals have created a remarkable Sky View platform from bamboo. It provides a bird's eye view of the village and a panoramic view of Bangladesh (only a few kilometres from the border). In the East Khasi Hills, Mawlynnong is a three-hour drive south of Shillong. You can stay there in a simple guest house in the village or a house on stilts.
Dawki-Shnongpdeng : The border town of Dawki, about an hour east of Mawlynnong, in the West Jaintia Hills, is worth a visit because of its pristine emerald Umngot River. The lack of protection makes it impossible to assume that there is a boundary between India and Bangladesh on the International Radcliffe Line (and indeed, locals from both sides cross and mingle). A mesmerising boat trip down the canal, which is said to be one of the cleanest on earth, is possible. If you're driving from Mawlynnong to Dawki, pause along the way at the beautiful Bophill Drop. The village of Shnongpdeng, only a short distance from Dawki, is the perfect place to stay.
Falls of Krang Suri: There are waterfalls in Meghalaya and there's Krang Suri there. Located near Jowai, about an hour northeast of Dawki and about three hours southeast of Shillong in the West Jaintia Hills, this small but spectacular waterfall is tucked away. To meet it, be prepared to hike for about 20 minutes down a path of stairs. Tickets for entry cost 50 rupees. You should go diving, even though you're advised to wear a lifejacket. There are change rooms and toilets installed.
In the dense canopies of western and southern Meghalaya, the Western Hoolock gibbon stirs as herds of Asian elephants rustle through the jungles, crossing gushing streams and steep hillsides with surprising agility. A clouded leopard stalks the dawn somewhere, its long bushy tail and claws making it at home in the trees, while a python slithers through the fallen leaves, sniffing out his next meal. Bird watchers come to Meghalaya to see several very unusual species of birds. Hornbills, blue-throated barbets, flycatchers from Verditer, crimson sunbirds, crested snake eagles, and weavers from Baya are only a handful of the hundreds of feathered inhabitants you can spot.
Shillong is the state capital of Meghalaya and the principal cultural centre as well. Thanks to its position as a regional intellectual nerve centre, home to a young, imaginative and aspiring community, it is a microcosm of the larger North-East region. In several corners here, the beauty of the old hill town still resonates and its culture and scenery have a seamless mix of contemporary and traditional. Its shopping centres are filled with busy cafes and restaurants and the town is also a great stop for avid shoppers. The nightlife of the city draws revellers from all over and its live music venues have provided the platform for popular local and foreign musicians.
Meghalaya is populated by many separate peoples, with the Khasis, the Garos, and the Pnars being the most common. The Hajongs, the Karbis, and the Koch belong to other tribes. The tribes, described in varying dialects, diets, and clothes, are further divided into sub-tribes and clans.
There are many residents of the state whose previous generations, especially in the capital Shillong, have migrated from nearby and distant regions, adding a cosmopolitan charm to the area.
Without such cultural interactions, a visit to Meghalaya is incomplete. During the major festivals, the perfect time is to experience cultural rituals and imagery.
In the Khasi calendar, Shad Suk Mynsiem is a big occurrence, observed in the month of April as a display of thanks to nature and to mark the harvest and sowing of new seeds. Highlights involve a dance clad in the rich traditional clothing of the participants, laden with silk, gold, coral, and more.
A short monsoon drive south of Shillong will take you to Sohra (Cherrapunjee) and Mawsynram, some of the rainiest locations on earth. Travel on a serpentine highway crossed on one side by a mountain and on the other side by a bowl of clouds. The best time to witness the mighty rains in Meghalaya is from June to August.
The very distinct spring and summer seasons of Meghalaya provide the best relief from the rising mercury of the plains, with temperatures barely reaching the mid-twenties and during this time of year the vegetation is most vibrant.
Meghalaya winters are a treat. In the sub-tropical stretches, it is the most comfortable time to enjoy natural excursions, an explanation why the locals love their picnics during the season. Because of the dense morning ice, the higher reaches of Meghalaya deliver wonderful wintry scenes, but this is also the season of bright sunshine days.
Meghalaya is a haven for explorers and nature-lovers, from delicate rare orchids to endangered monkeys dangling from green canopies, cascading waterfalls and rocky valleys to serene lakes and cinematic summits.
A combination of high elevations and low valleys, combined with the abundant abundance of rain and resulting vegetation, the rugged geography of Meghalaya has made it a refuge for species of wildlife. Due to inaccessibility, there are many woods in the state that remain a mystery. Many trees, however, benefit from local traditions that preserve them.
In a comparatively small state, Meghalaya 's geography makes for a comparison of perspectives and circumstances. The state features hilly country dominated by an elevated table-land, frequently sliced by steep valleys such as grooves, dripping down in the west and north to plains and low valleys and dizzying cliffs in the southern and eastern ranges.
David Scott was a British officer of the 18th century who was responsible for making a bridle road connecting the plains of Sylhet with the summits of the Khasi Hills. The David Scott trail is an entertaining route, peppered with amazing views and quite a bit of history, as in these remote ranges, this is basically the road that marked the dawn of colonisation.
The one between Mawphlang (adjacent to the sacred groves) and a hamlet on the Sohra Highway is the most well maintained stretch. Any of the highlights of the David Scott Trail are an arched bridge at the latter end, a river crossing, and spell-binding views of the valley up in Mawphlang. It is 16 km long and will take 4 to 5 hours on average.
For a fun walk, you don't need to go too far from the state capital. There are plenty of good trails set among a mix of dense pine and sub-tropical plants in the Laitkor and Upper Shillong Reserve Forests.
For most places, it is a steep climb, but you should be able to reach the higher reaches of the city in less than an hour along these forest roads. One of the famous trails in this forest is the Rhododendron Trek route, while another trail that starts at South Shillong's Lawsohtun town takes you directly to the viewpoint of Shillong Mountain. Make sure that you stay hydrated on your trek and it is always safer to go with any local company if you are unfamiliar with the area.
