Vellore Fort is a 16th-century granite fort surrounded by a deep moat set in the heart of the city, 1.5 km from Vellore Town Railway Station. It was built in the 16th century by Bommi and Thimma Reddy during the reign of King Krishnadeva Raya of Vijayanagar. The fort was captured by the Adil Shahis, the Bijapur Muslim kings, in the 17th century. It was then taken by the Marathas, and later, in the early 18th century, by Daud Khan of Delhi. In 1768, the British took possession of this fort and controlled it until Independence. The Tipu Sultan family and the last king of Sri Lanka, Vikrama Rajasinha, were held as prisoners in the fort during British rule. The fort is an exemplary example of military architecture and has tolerated many assaults.

Temple of Sri Venkateswara Swamy, Tirupati : One of the most revered Hindu shrines and the richest pilgrimage centres in the world is a landmark Vaishnavite temple near Tirupati, Sri Venkateswara Swamy Temple. It is also the most visited worship place in the country, attracting 50,000 to 100,000 daily devotees and up to 500,000 on special occasions. The Vellore Fort was built in the Arcot and Chittor districts with granite from the nearby quarries. It spreads over a 133 acre area.
